Missing Text in Wine 1.1.12

Post by sharathpaps »

Hello,
I am running a fully updated Intrepid Ibex 8.10 on my desktop. I installed Wine from the repositories using

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install wine
Wine 1.1.12 is downloaded & installed correctly but none of the menus or buttons have any text in them. Clicking on any button flashes the text on it. Everything else is replaced by _ .

Here are a couple of screenshots :

and

I have tried everything to find a solution for more than a month now - posted on forums, googled, tried reinstalling, compiling from source, using winetricks everything that a newbie like me can think of. From all my searching, I have realised that a lot of people have the same problem but none of them seem to have a solution.

Please let me know & I'll post any other detail you might need promptly.

Note : I've also had the same problem with the latest Opera & Filelight.

Thank You

Austin,
You have my eternal gratitude...Believe me, its been more than a month I've been looking for a solution to this problem.

Disabling the Nvidia accelerated graphics driver & restarting the system did the trick. Wine, Opera & Filelight are all working very well. I'm just posting the solution that helped me & screenshots here so that anyone else having the same problem will find it easier.

Solution :

This is the driver that I had to disable. In Intrepid Ibex 8.10, go to, System>Administration>Hardware Drivers & disable the Nvidia accelerated graphics driver. Use the screenshot as a guide. Restart the system. You might have to reinstall wine & other programs which had this problem.

This is Wine working perfectly fine :-)

@Austin, Thank You very much once again. Kindly mark this post as solved.

Have you consulted the Ubuntu fora about this? It appears that some fonts or font handling software is missing from your installation of this distribution of Linux. In other words this is not a Wine problems from what you state here.

It's an Nvidia driver bug, Ubuntu is _well_ aware of the issue.

Yuck! And I thought that Nvidia was the way to go with Ubuntu Linux. Do the Nvidia drivers fix this problem so that Wine will display properly?

The problem is in the Nvidia legacy drivers, so only older graphics
cards should be affected. Nvidia has acknowledged the problem, so
hopefully it'll be fixed in the next release. See:
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16146 for more info.
