App only supporting old videocards...

Is there a way to simulate a specific video card?
I mean I have a specific app - Shadow Company: Left for Dead,
a game from 1999 which only runs if you have some older NVidia cards or
3dfx (on Win this problem exists too).
So is there a way to make the program think its e.g a Riva TnT
via some registry keys maybe VideoPciVendorID or something.

It depends which method the game uses to detect the video card, there is more than one. Is there a demo or the game freely available for download?
