Davka Writer

Post by Ditzian »

I am a new Linux and Wine user. I have successfully installed Wine in PCLinuxOS, and it is able to run an old Legacy program from Parsons Technology called Address Book.

I then used Wine to install an old version of Davka Writer, a Hebrew word processing program. The program appeared to install correctly, as far as I could tell. The installation required a serial number, which I have. However, when I try to use it, the Davka splash screen appears, then the program shuts down. I have no idea how to debug this situation, so if someone can take me by the hand to try to get it working, I would appreciate it.

Thank you,

Jan

What version of Wine? Run it from a terminal and post whatever messages appear.

I do not know about davka, but the "other" Hebrew WP, Dagesh, behaves
similarly. Likely due to their keyboard handling.

Dagesh runs perfectly using crossover wine so you might try davka with that
(they gave free copies of crossover a few weeks ago!)

dimesio,

Thank you for the link to the Wiki. There is no way in the world that I would have known how to run Wine from a terminal. I was astounded (and thankful) when the first Windows program I installed just appeared in the PC menu and then ran properly.

Wine version 0.9.58-1

Run from Konsole:

[root@Natashahouse drive_c]# wine Davkawriter
wine: creating configuration directory '/root/.wine'...
Could not load Mozilla. HTML rendering will be disabled.
libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x4b
wine: '/root/.wine' created successfully.
wine: could not load L"C:\\windows\\system32\\Davkawriter.exe": Module not found
[root@Natashahouse drive_c]#

David Baron,

What is crossover Wine and where would I get it, or should I simply do a Google?

That's realy old. Upgrade.
Run from Konsole:

[root@Natashahouse drive_c]# wine Davkawriter
Why are you running as root? Don't run wine as root.
wine: creating configuration directory '/root/.wine'...
Could not load Mozilla. HTML rendering will be disabled.
libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x4b
Sounds like your video drivers are messed up...or you've got an old card.
wine: '/root/.wine' created successfully.
wine: could not load L"C:\\windows\\system32\\Davkawriter.exe": Module not found
You're not in the correct directory. cd to where the program is.

In response to the latest comment, here is another try. I did not realize that I was not at the target directory. I am not yet able to recognize directories from programs, especially in Konsole. Here is the latest dump, including some of my mistakes in navigation.

[jan@Natashahouse ~]$ cd .wine/drive_c
[jan@Natashahouse drive_c]$ dir
ADBOOK DavkaWriter\ Documents Program\ Files windows
[jan@Natashahouse drive_c]$ cd DavkaWriter\ Documents
[jan@Natashahouse DavkaWriter Documents]$ dir
[jan@Natashahouse DavkaWriter Documents]$ cd ..
[jan@Natashahouse drive_c]$ dir
ADBOOK DavkaWriter\ Documents Program\ Files windows
[jan@Natashahouse drive_c]$ cd Program\ Files
[jan@Natashahouse Program Files]$ dir
Common\ Files Davka Internet\ Explorer
[jan@Natashahouse Program Files]$ cd Davka
[jan@Natashahouse Davka]$ dir
DavkaWriter
[jan@Natashahouse Davka]$ dir
DavkaWriter
[jan@Natashahouse Davka]$ cd DavkaWriter
[jan@Natashahouse DavkaWriter]$ dir
Clipart davwrite.hlp _DEISREG.ISR Spelling Undo\ Files
davwrite.cnt DeIsL1.isu _ISREG32.DLL Tanach Whatsnew.CNT
davwrite.exe DeIsL2.isu readme.txt TIPS.txt WHATSNEW.HLP
[jan@Natashahouse DavkaWriter]$ wine davwrite.exe
[jan@Natashahouse DavkaWriter]$

When I did the above, the same thing happened as when I ran it from the menu--the Davka Writer splash screen appeared and then the program ended.

With respect to Austin's comment about upgrading Wine--I am using PCLinuxOS, whose user group (upon whom I rely heavily) strongly recommends not loading programs outside its Synaptic repos. While I am violating this rule by trying to run this Windows program, I am unwilling to replace a repo version with something else. If I break PCLinuxOS that way, all the king's horses and all the king's men won't even be willing to come to the wall to look at the egg on my face.

With respect to running as root, that was my error. I thought I had to do that, so I opened Konsole and did a su. This time I did not do that, and I won't do it in the future.

With respect to the old video card--I built this computer about six years ago, and I was cheap even then. I did not use the hottest video card I could find, I used a Sapphire Radeon 9000.

Thanks for the pointers. I do not know if this is any help. I did not even realize that there may be an Internet Explorer hidden in Wine. Here I am using Firefox when I could be using Internet Explorer.

You could try using the full path:

$ wine "C:\Program Files\Davka\DavkaWriter\davwrite.exe"
When I did the above, the same thing happened as when I ran it from the menu--the Davka Writer splash screen appeared and then the program ended.

You can always compile from source, or ask your distro to get newer
versions. Wine development is very rapid, and old versions are
outdated quickly.

I doubt it's the source of your problems, just pointing out the error
you had. It looks more like a driver problem though.

That Internet explorer implementation is very very primitive, and is
only there for apps that require it for rendering.

Open Office alternative to Davka

Post by Ditzian »

Yesterday I received a message suggesting that Open Office was a reasonable alternative to Davka Writer. Somehow I have managed to lose all trace of that message, and I would like to discuss this. I would appreciate it if the sender of that message would contact me again.

Thank you,

Jan
