program wont run problem with nethasp protection

Post by izar »

i have installed a clean copy of ubuntu 8.10 64bit
i installed a program called the Bar Ilan Responsa Project which uses a license from a local network server, using wine.
this program works perfectly for my friend who has ubuntu 8.10 32bit.
alas, when i try running the program i always get the message: "no answer from NetHasp license manager (15)"
(this is the error you get in windows if you try running the program when you are not connected to the network)
(the first times i installed the program the installation didn't go well and a few dll files weren't installed. i found out that this happened because i was trying to install from a location on my old windows (ntfs) partition. this was fixed when i copied the original installation folder to my ext3 partition, and installed from there)

i thought the cause might be the 64bit OS, so i removed it and installed kubuntu 8.10 32bit instead.
when that didn't work, i installed gnome and tried installing and running the program from there. didn't help.

i tried doing this both in wine 1.0.1 and 1.1.9 (which both work for my friend)
i also installed various packages such as:
winbind, smbfs, ntlm, cabextract (for ies4linux), samba...
i also tried switching windows versions in winecfg.
we copied the entire .wine folder form my friends computer to mien, and tried running the program from there.

as you can assume, non of this helped.

we tried comparing the output we get in terminal when running the program.
this is my friends output (which works):

(for some reason i get a simular messege when ever i run any program through wine, shuch as winecfg)

as you can see the to lines which have to do with "msvcrt". i tried replacing the msvcrt.dll file with one from windows xp and tried the same with one from vista. i also tried install playing with the override option in winecfg

finally me and my friend made a debug file with the command:

Code: Select all

:~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/ResponsaCD14$ WINEDEBUG=+relay,+seh,+tid env LANG=he_IL.utf8 WINEPREFIX="/home/avi/.wine" wine "C:\PROG~FBU\RESP~MT1\RESPONSA.EXE" &> ~/documents/debug.txt
(note that i am using wine 1.0.1 and my friend is currently using wine 1.1.9, so this might cause some difference. as noted oboe i tried also wine 1.1.9 and it still didn't work so this isn't the problem. if you wish i can create another debug file using wine 1.1.9 latter)
i named the files works (for my friend) and dosntwork (for mien) and attached them.
(we had to cut "works" because it was too big (32 mb) so we left about the number of lines in "dosntwork" and deleted the lines from there on)

we can't find any reason why the progarm works for my friend and not for me. can you please help?

Have you installed any other programs? That looks like a hardware
driver, which won't work in wine.

I'm having a problem with the same family of programs - in my case the Judaic Treasures 2 (Otzrot Yisrael) program.

I installed wine, and some of the winetricks repository, and cabextract. The install runs with no problem, but upon running the program, nothing happens. I'm back in XP now, so I can't get a dump.

Are any of these programs downloadable?

i don't really understand how this stuff works, but it is possible that your program cant work on wine. the only reason i am trying is that my program works perfectly for my friend, who has the same disto as mien, and there seems no reason why it works for him and not for me.

in this case the answer is absolutely negative (unless this specific program installed a driver for the license manager).

my program cant be legally downloaded, and i don't wish to use an illegal version.

no - these are programs designed to use a proprietary db (included on the cd) designed by Bar Ilan University, which is a db of the fulltext of an extensive (more or less, by which model) library of Jewish legal and homiletical material. It seems to run in a simple windows shell, but I don't know if it's c, vb, c++ or what...

In my case, there is no hasp, there is just a cd. Under wine, now updated to 1.1.10, the installer runs fine, but the program doesn't even address the cd drive. I get a clock on the mouse icon for about 30 sec, then a button on the bottom bar saying "Starting Judaic Treasures", and then nothing.

Possible, what licensing manager does it use? Any copy protection
(safedisc, etc.)?

Perfectly understandable. I was looking for a download so others could
test it and offer advice :-).

Even if this driver doesn't talk to USB device directly it might be some of their "unti-debugger" protection. In either case, if it doesn't load now on Wine, there isn't much you can do.

this is my friends output (which works):

Code: Select all

  :~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/ResponsaCD14$ env LANG=he_IL.utf8 WINEPREFIX="/home/a/.wine" wine "C:\PROG~FBU\RESP~MT1\RESPONSA.EXE"
this is my output (which dosn't work):

Code: Select all

@avi-laptop:~$ env LANG="he_IL.UTF-8" WINEPREFIX="/home/avi/.wine" wine "C:\PROG~FBU\RESP~MT1\RESPONSA.EXE"
Your friend is running it from the program directory. You aren't.

Terminal from winedbg

Post by danielbu »

I seem to have a much more basic problem than ivar - I ran my program in winedbg and got this:
me@my-computer:~$ winedbg judaica2
fixme:ole:DllRegisterServer stub
err:rundll32:WinMain Unable to load L"-s"
Couldn't start process 'judaica2 '
So it seems to me that my problem is at a lower level - eg. the DllRegisterServer is missing something. Any suggestions?

[/quote]Merry Christmas, first off.

Second, you have been told what to do to troubleshoot the problem. Open
terminal, change directories to the directory where the program is and
then run it from there like this:

Cd $HOME/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/<directory where program is>
wine <name of program executible> >/tmp/<log file> 2>&1

This will save any output from the program into the <log file> in the
tmp directory when running the program.

If the program still fails to run, there is a bigger problem and that
may be a borked installation of Wine.

Thanks, James.

The result from what you proposed is
wine: could not load L"C:\\windows\\system32\\JUDAICA2.exe": Module not found
So I guess that I should start again. Is there some sure fire way to wipe my wine installation so that I can reinstall it right?

Then you're not in the correct directory.

$ rm -rf ~/.wine

you are right. my friend also said that the program won't run if he didn't cd first to the program's directory.
but i have tried several times doing this too, and it didn't help.

Izar - I've just come to this discussion. That's very encouraging, but I can't figure out the bottom-line take-away from the link you posted to get Bar Ilan running myself with WINE.

Thanks,
Jason
