Cannot install PCBArtist. Using Lenny and wine 1.0.1-1. AppDB suggests going to c:/windows/temp/r... something or other but that folder isn't there. Tried copying the the install file to several different folders, including trying to install from the terminal. In terminal mode I get complaints about x server and setting display mode. I get a window that briefly flashes by and an error window box about using option /a.

AppDB lists program as Gold, does that mean it's supposed to run?

Gold means it ran fine with some tweaks for that particular person in that particular version of Wine.

The first thing I would suggest is fixing whatever Wine is complaining about with the x server and display mode. Wine can't display resolutions that your system doesn't support. If it still doesn't install, try upgrading to the latest development release of Wine (1.1.10) and see if that works. If none of that works--post console output.

When I tried using the terminal I saw a couple complaints about starting the x server and changing the display mode. I far as I can tell the x server is running and the display mode is 1024x768 and I have no clue as to how to change that nor any info as to what I should change it to. Besides, if I did any of that, then what happens if I break the system and can't use it for anything else? If I download and install the very latest version, then I end up with a new problem where the package manager won't recognize future updates for that package. Not that it matters that much, I guess, as I have yet to find a software package that runs without issues under any release of Wine on any version of Linux. If I do run into something that works, I don't have to wait very long for an update that breaks it.

I'm pretty certain the issue has to do with the pcbArtist installer and how Wine is handling it. See screenshot of first complaint box, this happens about half a second after starting install.

And we're not telepathic enough to troubleshoot the problem without console output.

Won't work. Don't see how I can relay the info, other than try to re-type it. It's probably bogus error message anyway. I'll just wait for PCBArtist to get released for Debian.

That just explains how to run something from the command line, which is one of the things I tried previously. The PCBArtist starts to unpack itself, tries to do something Wine can't/won't handle and dies. Doesn't seem to make a difference if I double-click on the executable in the download directory or place the executable in any other directory including the temp directory under .wine/windows/temp or run it directly from the terminal command line. Same results every time. I get a "windows installer-installation wrapper" error box almost instantly with a bunch of mumbo jumbo in it that when I try to do what it says, accomplishes nothing.

Maybe somebody who knows more about Linux and Wine and tries to install PCBArtist will know what to do and post here?

Let me see if I've got this straight. You know perfectly well how to run the app from the command line, but are too lazy to copy and paste the terminal output to the forum so that someone with more experience can help you interpret it. Instead, you are hoping that a total stranger with nothing better to do will take the time to hunt down a place to download this app, download it, install it, figure out how to make it work, and spoonfeed you the solution, which you're not going to follow anyway if it involves doing anything you find too mentally taxing.

Have I missed anything?
