i'm running ubuntu 8.10, and i was wondering if theres a way to make it so windows programs with autorun scripts can start when i put the disc in. if its supposed to automatically start, why isn't it?

That's up to your distribution to handle, not Wine.

Last I checked, they were looking to add support for it, but wanted to
add protection for things like virii, Sony rootkits, etc.

ok i suppose thats a good thing its delayed then - ubuntu seems to release things before they actually work.

since i know i don't have any programs with security issues and don't plan to get anything new from anyone any time soon, are you aware of anything i can do whether its safe or not?

i will not hold this question against anyone who answers it if it fails.

On openSUSE, when I insert a cd with an autorun KDE pops up a dialog telling me there is an autorun and asking if I want to let it execute (along with a warning that this is a security risk). I'm not entirely sure if that's a KDE thing or an openSUSE thing, but you could see if Kubuntu does something similar.

gnome does the same thing, but if i tell it to execute the autorun it says it doesn't know what to do with it, so if theres some configuration file for autoruns then i'd like to know it

If it doesn't know what to do with it, it might be that Gnome doesn't know what to do with EXE files? Try explicitly associating EXE files to Wine inside Nautilus first.
