chm NOT fixed but success elswhere

Post by jcfuller »

First: Contrary to claims chm viewing is NOT fixed. It's better but graphics and the index are still broken. I washed my hands on bug reporting of the problems, as I now use firefox with the chm addon which works even better than the last kchmviewer I tried.

Great News:
I installed the latest PBWin9.0 and the first example I tried worked flawlessly.
This surprised me as this was a COM example that uses the Microsoft WebBrowser Object.

So please report a bug in an app we can reproduce and fix :-)

Been there, done that only to be basically called a moron.

There has been progress, but to claim it fixed is not true.

I don't know what was used to test this but I have yet to find any chm that displays correctly.

Here are screenies of PowerBASIC's PBWin90 chm main screen.

You might try emailing [email protected] explaining the reason you want it with a cc to [email protected].

I have seen numerous other chm files with the the same basic failures so it should not be too difficult find one. I don't use wine enough for it to concern me. I posted primarily because the claim that it's fixed is false.

As for the bug report I believe it was 10166 ??

According to that bug report, what was fixed was a specific problem with a specific app, and you weren't even the original reporter.

If you know of other problems with other apps, you should file bug reports for them. If you're not willing to do that, don't complain if they don't get fixed.

I admit I may have jumped the gun a bit on this one but I was not complaining about it not being fixed. I misread the "What's New" as a flat "chm is fixed across the board" . My bad.

I still find it a bit hard to fathom ,that a product(wine), that's been in existence for 10+ years does not support chm viewing. It's been the main help format on windows for almost that long???

I really don't care if it gets fixed or not . As I said I use the chm add-on for firefox.

Who needs help viewer if no one reads help? That's why it's in that state.

jeffz,
My requests fell on deaf ears so I will offer another chm file that shows similar problems if you are still interested?
I will file a bug report if necessary.
One note: None of the navigation button icons display correctly and appear to be just place holders as none (except home) works on all chm files I've tried.
Here is the link to the BCX basic to c Translator: http://www.bcxgurus.com/bcx_install.exe
It installs fine with wine although I think there are some path issues as first attempts to compile failed.
The help file is in the BCX DevSuite Pro\Bin\help directory.
The chm file does show but with the icon problems I mentioned above.

If you click on the BCX Language [+] then select BCX GUI Procedures the page shows but clicking on any of the links in this page shows a blank page.

File the bug report. This may be more compacated than it appears to
fix. Attach the chm file to the bug report, if allowed.

Bug http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13015 is already about this.
My guess is that Wine can't resolve URLs inside the CHM file. Images
and stylesheets aren't loaded and clicking on links doesn't work.

Tijl,
Yeah that's probably the case but it's rather old and probably got overlooked because it's title is for a specific app; and I don't see an attachment. I think I'll go ahead and post a new report with an attached chm that fails.
