Could Not Locate Entry For HAL.DLL In Setup Log

I am very new to using WINE. I have installed WINE 1.1.9 with my 64 bit Ubuntu 8.10 system and gotten one Windows game to work just fine. Perfect, in fact.

Now, I am trying to help a friend of mine, who wants to switch from Windows to Linux in his business. He has one Windows application, necessary for business purposes. I am hoping to find a way to get it to work with Linux, using WINE. It is not a common application, something specific to the insurance business, called, "Comparison Rater," from Capital Software, Inc.

I have tried to install it under WINE, using both WINE 1.1.9, as well as the new 1,1,10, without success. I think it's real close, but just not quite there. I am hoping someone who knows a lot more about WINE than I do, might be able to assist me.

When attempting to install, I get the following error:

"Could not locate entry for HAL.DLL in setup log to determine type of HAL to update." If I could manage to get this resolved and the Windows program to run under WINE, I could add a small insurance company to the list of new Linux users.

Could anyone offer some assistance?

Try:

$ touch ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/hal.dll

or try adding hal.dll to the fakedll list in tools/wine.inf

Austin, than you very much for the speedy reply. I'm green as grass with WINE. As such, I'm not real sure as to exactly the steps I should follow here for your instructions. I'm guessing it's to be done from a terminal. If it wouldn't be too much trouble, could you give me sort of a "step by step" on following your instructions? I really appreciate it and apologize for my "newbieness" with WINE.

Yes, needs to be done from a terminal. Simply paste that command and
press enter (the first one). If not, post your results (terminal
output would also help).

I tried the first suggestion you made, figuring I should enter it from a terminal. I tried once more to install, but received the same error. I have not yet tried adding hal.dll to fakedll in tools/wine.inf, as I'm not exactly sure how to do that.

I don't know if this will be any help or not, but I found this Capital.log from my attempt to install, so I will include it, as well:

I don't see anything about hal in that log...

The other method is to edit wine.inf. It's included with your wine
package. Most likely, in /usr/share/wine/wine.inf. There's a section
of fake dlls:

[RegisterDllsSection]
;;some dlls have to be registered first
11,,ole32.dll,1
11,,oleaut32.dll,1
11,,shell32.dll,1

11,,actxprxy.dll,1
11,,amstream.dll,1
...

add:
11,hal.dll,1

In the appropriate spot. Then, try in a clean ~/.wine.

I have edited wine.inf, Austin, making the addition you have suggested. I am not exactly sure how to try installing again from a "clean ~/.wine"

Could you please explain? Also, I noted, as well, no reference in the terminal to the error I get when trying to install.

To 'clean' wine, see the following FAQ:

I suggest using the 'backup' method as it can be used to restore your
current Wine setup if installing to a 'clean' Wine does not work.

I followed the instructions you offered and did the backup. I then attempted to install, but have the same error.

If something wants to touch HAL.DLL let alone update it it will not work on Wine any time soon.

It's ether some bogus check, some M$' junk that wants to add some crap to kernel, a driver or a virus/malware. You should consult readme / manual for this software what all is it installing.

you could run the program like:

WINEDEBUG=+relay,+seh,+tid wine C348.exe &>/tmp/relay.txt

and than put the bzipped2 file relay.txt somewhere up on the internet, so we could have a look at the cause of the error message. Regards

vitamin, I don't think it's anything to do with spyware/viruses. This particular application is an updater on insurance information, used only by independent insurance agents, in their business. I think they pay a service fee for access to the data, necessary for their business operations.

My friend, who needs this application, in order to switch his office to Linux, has discussed his desire to move to Linux with the tech guy at Capital software. While this is the first request they have had in regard to using Linux, he is extremely interested, himself, as he's an open source user and fan. He would also like to see if we can't get it to work properly with WINE.

I'm supposed to get in touch with him directly, this coming week, since I'm the one trying to get it all working for my friend. They seem very upfront about the whole software situation and it's not a software package available to the public. He did give me a link to download their application, so I could see if we could get it to work.

If you could offer me some specifics as to how to do this, I will sure give it a try. Not sure where to upload the file on the Internet, either, so maybe you could offer a suggestion.

Near the bottom of that trace, wine says it cannot find C348.exe in system32. Could that be a cause or just an after effect?

yeah, it means wine couldn't find C348.exe at all, zenarcher, you have to cd into the directory where C3384.exe is; then run again with the comnmand I posted, and put the bzipped2 file relay.txt up.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding here or something. C348.exe is the install program I downloaded from the company. I just have saved it to the desktop. I ran "winefile" from a terminal, then found C348.exe on the desktop, clicked on it and attempted the install. That is when the install runs, nearly all the way to the end and I get the error message. That is what I did, then I ran your command and put that file up for you to look at. Am I doing something wrong?

The error occurs during the install attempt at the point when I am seeing:

"Copying File"
"C:\windows\system32\msjet35.dll"

In your post at Megaupload about 50 lines up from the bottom it says

wine: could not load L"C:\\windows\\system32\\C348.exe": Module not found

It does look as if your programme is looking for C348.exe in windows/system32. Why it should look there and what the module remark is all about is confusing and may suggest the solution is not simple. However, it could be worth copying your programme into drive_c/windows/system32 within the .wine folder and seeing if it runs then.

It looks in system32 because it can't find the executable in the current directory

If you saved the executable on the desktop you have to open a console, then cd ~/Desktop, then run the command i gave you

Perhaps I have made some progress, after going through the Wiki. At least I don't have the same error when I try to install now.

I downloaded a copy of HAL.DLL and installed it in the \windows\system32 folder under the "C" drive in WINE. I thought perhaps that would resolve the issue. It seems to have helped, but gives me a new problem.

I am now getting further toward installing, but at the end of the install I am getting this error message:

"Setup has detected that the Service Pack version of the system installed is newer than the update you are applying to it. You can only install this updat on a computer with no Service Packs installed."

Does anyone have a suggestion or idea here?

Sure, but that application (or at least the installer) uses a DLL (library) that it probably doesn't even need, and yet that DLL is the source of all your problems so far. A Windows-native DLL probably doesn't work because it (or else the installer itself) apparently wants to do something with the Windows Service Packs, and Wine simply doesn't have these anymore. The only solution probably from here is to either test if an already installed-in-Windows version of the application could work in Wine (by copying it over to a Wine installation), or to report this problem to Wine's bug tracker and hope it can be fixed soon enough.

PS. WINE is nowadays called Wine (only a capital letter on the W) because it's more "aesthetically pleasing" (according to the Wine FAQ).
