Command and Conquer Generals

Post by bobbo85 »

I am unable to run Generals, or Generals: Zero Hour with wine.

The splash screen comes up, but then it says it cannot locate the DVD - which is in the drive and it actually whirls up to speed when the splash screen starts...

Any ideas?

This is a quite sensitive subject : CD protection.
Some work with wine, some don't. What you can do is
consulting appdb.winehq.org and see if some user have
found a workaround.

If not, I'm afraid you will get stuck until this is
fixed/worked around.

Try running winecfg and setting your dvd drive to be a cd-rom device
instead of local hard disk.

Thanks for getting back to me so fast austin987.
I found on the appdb that some people have had success using no-cd cracks. The instructions are to patch from v1 to v1.04, then to use the 1.04 no-cd crack.

My next roadblock is this: The patch gives me the following error message:
"Old file not found. However, a file of the same name was found. No update done since file contents do not match."

Solved! (Mostly)

I didn't figure out how to get the game to see the DVD :-(
I DID however, find a No-CD patch that worked.

The problem was that I needed to use the no-cd cracks for "The First Decade" not the individual no-cd cracks for Generals and Zero Hour.

Note: The game patches for Zero Hour and Generals are also not applicable. The First Decade DVD seems to have them taken care of.

The splash screen hangs for about a minute, but the game then comes to life beautiful as ever!

*The only issue remaining is this: No cursor! Any ideas?

Does the game use an animated cursor? Can you disable it? If not, you
may be hitting http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10708

That game does have animated cursors, that is the correct bug, and I am slowly, but surely working on fixing it. I have no idea whether my fixes will go in before the 1.0 code freeze, though. Only time will tell how much functionality I can implement and get accepted before then. In any case, I will fix it, but it might take a long time.

Have you thought about keeping your work posted in a git tree in a
public repository?

I have thought about it a bit, but haven't really pursued it until you said something. Anyhow, I opened up a repo last night, and will push work to it when I think it is ready. Currently, I haven't really uploaded anything of use for this thread.

PS. It seems I screwed something up so that when I push to it now, it fails. I need to, and will, contact the admin or whoever is in charge of repo.or.cz about it.
