Wine 10.7 - the GOG installer won't go away/down

Post by rado84 »

Until 40 minutes ago I was using Wine 10.5 and everything was fine with the GOG installer - press "Show the desktop" and all windows, including the GOG installer would go and stay down (minimized). Then I upgraded to v10.7 and now I can't get rid of the GOG installer while it's running (installing a game) - no matter what I did, it was always on top! With "always on top" (and no minimize button), I thought I had to wait for the game to finish installing. Nearly at the end of the installation it occured to me to try something: winecfg  Graphics  disable "window manager". That seemed to fix the problem.
While there seems to be a solution to the problem, the fact is there IS a problem with the window manager of wine. It's not normal to be unable to minimize a window, even one with just an X button.

Edit: that solution worked only for a few minutes, then the GOG window returned back to "always on top", which means I'll have to downgrade wine.

Same here, it's very annoynig. One can't get rid of the GOG's installer in any way. The moment you click on minimize it pops up again and it's always on top.

Thanks for sharing this! Disabling the window manager in winecfg is a helpful workaround, but you're right—Wine 10.7 shouldn't break window behavior like that. Definitely worth reporting upstream.

... worked for like 5 minutes and then the window went back to annoying me on top.
If you know where to report it "upstream" - go ahead bc I don't.

While not exactly a solution to your problem, you can just bypass the installer altogether by extracting its contents with 'innoextract'. That's what I usually do nowadays, since it's often the case that all the installer does is merely to extract its contents in a folder. Keep in mind that some installers add some values to the registry or install some additional utilities/libraries, so you have to use the installer in that case.
