After install, I can't find wine

Post by gsalazar »

My native Linux system is Rocky Linux 9.4 and installation of wine there is rather tricky; so, I am going the container route.

I am using Apptainer to create a Fefore 40 container; in there, I am able to 'dnf install wine-staging', but at the very end of a presumably successful installation, I can't find wine.

What am I missing?

Below is the output of the installation:

Code: Select all

Apptainer> dnf install -y wine-staging

Our packages install wine to /opt/wine-<BRANCH>/bin, not /usr/local/bin. The winehq-<branch> packages install compatibility symlinks that enable using our wine as the system default, but if you didn't install it, you will have to use the full path to wine when running it.

I suspect this issue might be related to the one I reported in viewtopic.php?t=39498 ?

I can find the mentioned directories but haven't (much of) a clue how to get the non-working progs to work under wine.
I have tried right-clicking the relevant .exe files in my file manager (Dual Commander), selecting 'Open with...' and pointing at the wine64 file in the /bin folder as indicated above but this does not start the prog.

Please advise further, TIA, Chris

Thanks for the response.
I initially get a new window which states something along the lines of "ztw64.exe... has encountered a serious problem and needs to close"
Meanwhile in terminal, it stops at the line about starting the debugger....
If I close the new window (by clicking the button) the rest of the following appears before returning to the $ prompt

$ wine ztw64.exe

The responses are similar if I use the 32 bit version with ztw.exe

Is it simpler if I just try a re-install over what is already there? :-)

TIA

The program seems to work for me, at least on first look.

So, I tried a reinstall of ztree.
All went well and after going through the windows I was given the option to 'Run now' - so I did..
And it ran, and all was well..

Then, I closed it and tried to reopen it..

Same problem as before!
Yes, even from a command line too.
Aaargh..

But at least I know it is *capable* of running in its present incumbance.

Just how do I get it to go again?

TIA, Chris

Thanks for the input but I am not sure that it is the same prog we are talking about there?
Unfortunately the outward link to the relevant page is no longer valid.
The prog I use is still at ztree.com
However, I have now got my issue resolved!
See viewtopic.php?t=39498 and below, for my resolution

For info, I have now resolved this issue following further correspondence on the thread viewtopic.php?t=39498

As part of my efforts to resolve this issue, in the last few days I had tried updating wine to the latest version.
This update went without problems but it did not change anything. The problem with some Win 7 progs remained.

Finally, in some desperation, I reinstalled Wine over the top of the existing version.
Somehow this has fixed things and everything now works - and some new icons!
So, a mere update to wine the other day was not sufficient but a reinstall was.
Hope this helps someone else.

Cheers, Chris

sudo apt install --install-recommends winehq-stable
