... Microsoft funded the wine project?
it is within their interests as far as I can see, given that they are trying to sell their programs (office, development tools, licences, etc) to every user available? Mac OS, linux, who know what next.... If you cant beat them (them as in Linux) , join them ..!
Imagine the next Office generation advert: Office, the most supported multi-platform suite. Take all your files with you anywhere, anytime, Fully compatible with any previous office. Microsoft certified.
what if...
It is in their interests in some respects, but it definitely is NOT in their interests in other respects - mainly the respect where people stop using their OS, which probably rakes in by far the most money. So it's not gonna happen.
Also, if it did, I imagine them wanting to put restrictions on the source code and chip in very litte of their own (after all, it's not like they're gonna release some Windows source code just to support Wine). Aaaand if they did there'd DEFINITELY be a restritive license. So no.

Re: what if...
With same logic you can say M$ funded whole development of Linux, since it's only around to run Wine.... Or is it?dr_costas wrote:... Microsoft funded the wine project?
If the day comes that MS decides to fund wine and there was no strings attached just like most other opensource projects. Its take the money and run.
It may seam in Microsoft interest. MS fears the long term effect.
When trying to sell windows harder completion. Linux vs Windows now is getting a up hill battle for them. Now if they did not have MS Office to push it over edge they are in trouble.
MS also whats to have patents to get income after Windows dies as a OS.
I would say not imposable but it is highly unlikely Microsoft will ever do it. Problem is by the time they think of doing it they could already be too far cash strapped to send funding our way anyhow.
