Hello,
I tried to switch from Windows to XUbuntu 20.04.3 and therefore I have a few windows programs (MS Office 2007, Notepad++, etc.), which I don`t want to miss.
So I first tried Playonlinux and then also Crossoverlinux to install them and it seemed good. Also PDF-Xchange Editor 6 was no problem with Crossoverlinux.
So I thought all is fine, set up the system new and then the PDF-Xchange didn‘t work to install anymore. So I tried Version 7 Portable, Version 8 and 9 – I do not ḱnow it anymore in detail, but I remember, that version 9 worked, but then to a later time also not anymore, same with version 8. In the meanwhile, I set up the system once more and now, no version works anymore??.
I try it at the moment only with WineHQ, version is 7.0.
The errors are:
(1) Installer Version: Installerstart with wine, then there come two normal installer-dialog windows, the Installationroutine seems to start, but then the progress bar is hanging.
(> Only as compare: Start with CrossoverLinux: wants to install .NET 2.0, 4.0, 4.6 > some errors (if I correctly remember), after that starts the installer, then it hangs.)
(2) Portable Version: By starting an error-message „Unable to load the ‘PDFXEditCore.x86.dll‘module. Please re-install the application.“
> The dll existst, it is in the same directory.
Because of a tip in the AppDB, I also made a 32-bit-wine-prefix, as in the Wine-FAQ explained, but it don‘t work, same problem.
The problem seems strange to me, because it worked once and now – in a decreasing way (through the versions) not further anymore.
I‘m new to linux and wine and have no idea, in which direction I have to search for a solution.
Can anyone give me a tip?
Thanking very much in advance
Greetings
Christian

Re: PDF-XChange Editor don t works with wine
I've successfully installed PDF Xchange Editor on Crossover. I'm using Ubuntu 20.04 and even though the program runs, it constantly freezes after a while. It usually happens after some time of inactivity. I've tried using 32bit and 64bit versions, portable and installable. All have the same problem.
For Crossover, you don't need to install any other packages, PDF XChange Editor will work without any dependency. I haven't tried using vanilla wine, so I don't know if there are errors with it. I recommend creating a 64bit bottle since the installer seems to be 64bit also.
I have a feeling the problem happens because of my Nvidia card since both my desktop and laptop (both have Nvidia) have this problem. I've also reported it to Crossover, and even though I'm a paying customer of them, they always tell me that they are not going to look into it, not enough people use this app I guess.
I recommend using Foxit Reader for Linux, it's a native app and has a lot of good features. If you want to edit PDFs, I suggest Master PDF from Code Industry, or if you don't need a lot of stuff just use LibreOffice Draw.
