Simsig (railway signalling simulation) stopped working after upgrade to Loader 5. Long story, I ended up running Ubuntu 20.04, installed Wine 5.0 using Synaptic. Downloading Simsig from the official site www.simsig.co.uk gave me a basic Loader 5.0 installation that cannot contact the server to update (I think the latest version is now 5.6) and download the full complement of sims. Extensive testing with Simsig people confirms my installation is not able to contact the Simsig servers; I have full internet access for Firefox, Thunderbird and Zoom though.
As part of the testing I found I needed Gecko, which is now installed (Synaptic again, I think - I'm a refugee from Windows but not a sophisticated user by any means). Testing IE as made available there I find I can access Wine HQ and Simsig, but nowhere else. Discussion of the issue has suggested there may be an issue with TLS but I can find no way to get to it on that IE. (There's a suspicion this may be a red herring, but it feels important to give any information that might help in any way at all.)
Any pointers anyone can offer would be most welcome... Simsig forum seems to be pretty much out of ideas at the moment.
SimSig unable to communicate with server; (Loader 5.0), Wine 5.0, Ubuntu 20.04

Hi,
Have you already tried upgrade to (wine-devel) version wine-5.15 or 5-16?
I don`t know if the problem you describe is what I did, but when i use wine-5.16, and i launch SimSig there`s an "update" button, and when i click it, it starts to download things and install things.
Is that what doesn`t work for you? If so, like said, try upgrade to wine-5.1*

Re: SimSig unable to communicate with server; (Loader 5.0), Wine 5.0, Ubuntu 20.04
Thank you @qwertymnb. No, I've not yet got into -devel versions; I'm not sure I see myself as sufficiently knowledgeable to be messing about with the advanced stuff, I seem to find the stable releases have more than enough 'interest' for me
But thanks for the suggestion; I think I'd like to see if there's any ideas relating to 5.0 before I try to get too advanced. (Like Pooh Bear, I'm a signalman of very little brain... back in the day, all the signalboxes I worked were fully mechanical and even panels were on the clever side for me!)
A bit more detail perhaps. Clicking the 'update' button gives a message that Simsig is up to date. But there's also a 'Could not communicate with server' message on that start page and a red visual with a white cross that indicates the same. GeoffM (the Simsig boss) has been kind enough to check through the server logs when I tried to open Simsig and get updates and confirms there was no login attempt at the server, further indicating the problem is that Simsig cannot speak to the wider world.
I should perhaps have said that I have looked through the Wine FAQ and tried editing the hosts file as suggested in https://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#My_program_ ... get_online I was aware that refers to Wine 1.x so not greatly surprised that it didn't seem to solve the problem. Of course, for these later versions the edit may need to be different, but at that point I really don't know where to start.
