Problem saving xls Office 2007 #1

Hello people,

I'm very new to wine but not so much to linux so try not to make the answers -if any- too complicated.

I have successfully installed office 2007 third edition using this post http://samanathon.com/how-to-install-mi ... buntu-804/ and it worked no probs, I only really installed word and excel though.

Word seems to work perfectly but I'm having some little problems with excel, I'm going to write a separate post for each as not to make this post too long!

The main problem I am having is saving xls (not xlsx) files. If I open an existing xls file and try to save it it gives this error:

Microsoft Office Excel cannot access the file .... there are several
possible reasons:

- The file name or path does not exist
- The file is being used by another program
- The workbook you are trying to save has the same name as a
currently open workbook.

None of these cases apply to me, I try to save the file in another location and I get the same message, renaming it doesn't work either, however, if I save the same file as an xlsx format in the same location then I does work. I can however save a new xls file in the same location. Strange

Any ideas?

The instructions you followed for installation are incorrect. Native rpcrt4 and msxml3 are not needed to install with the most recent versions of Wine. You should also not be downloading riched20--Office 2007 installs its own riched20, and that's the one you should use (just set the override in winecfg). As for the other overrides, I've seen them listed in various howtos, but have yet to see an explanation as to what they are supposed to fix. In particular, .NET 2.0 doesn't work very well in Wine yet, so I really don't see the point of installing it.

So my first suggestion is that you upgrade to 1.1.4 if you haven't already, then delete or rename your /.wine directory and start over. Install Office 2007 without any overrides--you can always add them later if you find that some function needs them.

Then, if something doesn't work, POST CONSOLE OUTPUT.

I done as you said, with wine 1.1.4 I installed no probs and didn't do any overrides. The same thing is happening though, here is the console output when I try to save an existing xls file.

The last two comments in that bug report do describe the problem you're reporting, but I'm not convinced it's really the same bug as the one originally reported.

I was able to reproduce the behavior once, but now I can't. What I did, experimenting, is save an xls file as xlsx, then resave it as xls. I have no idea why, but after doing that once, Excel 2007 now seems able to save xls files just fine.

Give it a try and let me know what happens.

You're right, I opened an existing xls file, saved it as an xlsx, the overwrote the original xls file. This file now works correctly, however, I have to go through this operation with each xls file I have...

I failed to mention that these xls files I'm opening have all been created by OpenOffice, I don't know if that could be the cause.

p.s. The last two comments on the bug report are mine, should I delete them and create a new bug with these findings?

Now that you mention it, my xls files are also all created by OpenOffice. So yes, that could be the cause.

I don't think comments can be deleted from bugzilla. As to whether to file a new bug report, I'd like to do a little testing first to see if the problem really is limited to xls files created in OpenOffice.

I pored through the Ubuntu forum threads linked to in the bug report, and someone else already noted that editing a file with OpenOffice seemed to cause the problem. Why no one bothered to say that in the actual bug report, I don't know. I'm going to add a comment to that effect myself. And you are right about it being that particular bug--I tested the same files in Excel 2003, and got the "disk full" message mentioned by the original poster.

I don't actually get a disk full message, instead I get the following...

Maybe in office 2007 it's the same error but just a bit more explained better.

The messages from Excel are just generic messages that something didn't work. The wording is different in 2003 & 2007, but the error occurs under exactly the same circumstances, so I'd say it's the same bug.

couldnt that be an excel 2007 "openoffice file only" bug ?
