No CD/DVD-ROM drive found (For the mother o' greebus)

Post by Deadlyfluffball »

Hello party people, I have just made an account and desperately need some lov-, I mean help.

Basically I own a copy of Fallout 3 for the PC that I used to play on bootcamp, which no longer works (tragic story) so I decided to try wine. Basically the disc doesn't want to read on my laptop but it read on an old desktop that doesn't have a functioning keyboard, so I transferred the files of the disc onto a folder and eventually got that baby on my laptop. Everything seemed to work fine until the message "No CD/DVD-ROM drive found" popped up.

Apparently there's some black magic you can do with winecfg but I'm no computer wizard, so I need one to explain things to me with crayons. (Preferably red)

Here are visual aids to my basic situation, as I'm bad at splannin' things

You can mount an iso as a loopback device and add the mounted volume as a CD-ROM in winecfg (click Show Advanced), but if the game expects to interact with real hardware, that won't work.

That sounds useful, I will google what those things are. I will try it when I can and report back!

It looks like it's an issue with Securom copy protection, which does tend to expect a physical disk to activate the software. My best suggestion would be to either get a copy that does not need a physical disk, or find a patch from Bethesda (or somewhere else....) that removes the copy protection for digital play.
