I want to use wine to play GTA Vice City and San Andreas on my Core 2 Duo 2ghz laptop with inter 4500mhd integrated graphics.
I want to squeeze out all the speed I can, so will there be issues or slower performance using these 32-bit Windows games on Wine when comparing a 64-bit distro vs a 32-bit one (Lubuntu specifically, but OS I guess doesn't matter much).
Basically will using the 64-bit distro cause more slowdown or issues since it will be running 32-bit Windows games under Wine?
Should I use 32-bit Lubuntu or 64-bit for best performance?
Re: Should I use 32-bit Lubuntu or 64-bit for best performan
To elaborate a bit, basically, I read that the 64 bit OS can run the 32-bit apps, and from what I understand Wine is 32-bit.
So if there is a performance gain to be had for running the 64-bit OS, I am guessing it could be cancelled out with the system needing to run the 32-bit libraries inside the 64-bit OS?
The main concern for me here is performance of 32-bit 3D Windows games (2001-2005 releases) under Wine, as Google Chrome and Open Office will be the only native Linux apps i'd be using and the performance of those isn't a major issue, and not a priority.
I hope this can be of use to others wanting to game on Linux on a similar system to me.
I have 3GB of ram on my system btw.
Intel integrated graphics 4500mhd isn't the best, but it will have to do for now as I can't afford a new system just yet.
I am hoping that I can get better performance under Lubuntu/Wine instead of Windows Vista that's currently on my system, as my idea is similar to how people make racing cars, to lower the weight (bloat of an OS) to be able to free the system up to run faster.
Not sure if it will work, as I am not sure if Vista is currently holding me back since I got 3GB of ram, so even though Vista is a ram hog, I am not sure if it is causing a lot of page swap activity or hogging cycles on the processor when running just one game.
