I've updated WINE and now sound lags in Insane.

Updated to what version? What distro, and are you using a distro package, a WineHQ package, or did you build Wine yourself?

I've updated to version 1.8. I'm using Linux Mint and the package for Ubuntu.

Try 1.9.0, and if the problem is still present, run a regression test and file a bug. http://wiki.winehq.org/RegressionTesting
