Missing Text in Tomb Raider 2013 NOT related to -nodwrite

Post by imneo88 »

Running an Intel I7 960 w/ 12 Gig of ram, 250 gig SSD
Linux Mint 17.2 Rafael Cinnamon X64 with all the updates kernel version(s) 3.16.0-38 & 3.19.0-28

I've tried 3 different versions of the Tomb Raider and Steam installation and ALL 3 have this same bug.. so I'm not sure if it's explicitly a WINE problem.. or more likely with the Cinnamon desktop environment, or even just a font management problem. However, when I run Steam everything appears fine, even if the text is barely readable on the Steam App, I can still see everything and it works fine. Tomb Raider loads fine, the game launcher loads fine, but when I get to the "Save Game Slot" section when starting a new game or continuing with a previous game ABSOLUTELY NOTHING IS THERE! The entire screen is blank where there are supposed to be a minimum of 4 save slots with the descriptions of the game there.. THERE IS NOTHING.
I can still select a random slot (due to not having any choice, they're all random because I can't see what's saved there) and continue or start a new game from there. From that point the game runs fine until Lara looks at one of her written logs.. and again NOTHING.
The same display overlay that the logs would normally show in will show 3D items when she finds a new masc, etc.. but just won't show the text in that window.

Any help would be appreciated, and again, I'm not sure exactly if this is WINE related or something with the Cinnamon Desktop Environment. I've spent over 40 hours researching it ONLINE and the ONLY other place I've seen this problem reproduced was on a MAC and there was NOTHING done to troubleshoot the problem. :(

Steps I've tried to troubleshoot this problem
1) Installed Steam 3 different ways including Native Steam w/ Linux Tomb Raider (which is why I think it's a Cinnamon Problem), Steam over Wine using the downloaded steam installer exe, and the PlayOnLinux Tomb Raider scripted installation which installs Windows Steam, All the libraries needed, and Tomb Raider. The results are ALWAYS the same.

2) I've copied ALL the FONT files from my wine folder, my windows PC, from everywhere virtually and placed them in the PlayOnLinux virtual drive's c:/windows/Fonts folder. Didn't work.

3) Tried changing the default GTK themes in Cinnamon as it was suggested that the rendering engine was having a FONT conflict of some sort, or couldn't properly render the fonts. Don't really understand it, but I tried it anyway.. Still nothing.

4) Tried Linux native video driver for my ATI card.. -and the ONLY thing I get is software rendering mode in 640x480
5) Tried installing ATI's latest video driver from their website which pooched my X server and had to be uninstalled
6) Tried an updated or newer Linux Kernel which caused a sound echoing problem as well.

7) Tried posting this "bug" on Linux Mint Forums.. but got nothing that worked.

If the problem is also present in the native game, then it's not a Wine issue. Valve does support their Linux client, so you might try asking about this on their forum.

I believe it to be an issue with the Cinnamon X86_64 Desktop environment and missing libraries.. IE: i386 libraries that WINE depends on but may not be installed or registered because I'm on a 64bit operating system. Does ANYONE have a complete list of Linux libraries needed for running Steam under WINE in a 64bit operating system? Seems like it.. is specific to Linux Mint 17.2 Rafael Cinnamon X86_64 since I cannot find any other reference or any other user with this specific problem. :(
