upgrading from 1.4 in mint 13

I just installed mint 13 on an old thinkpad, because it boots with the whole non pae thing. I am wanting to upgrade to a newer wine before I try to learn to use it. What is the best method to upgrade wine in mint? also I saw downloads for ubuntu and for debian . mint says it is based on both so which should I use?

You would use the Ubuntu packages for Mint based on Ubuntu and Debian packages for Mint based on Debian, but I doubt there are current Wine packages for that old a version of Mint. You could try building Wine yourself.
