can't install xml6

I am using the current version 1.6 of Wine I downloaded from this web site, and the version of Winetricks that IT downloaded, together wtih teh version of Gecko that it downloaded. I just got told I'm getting old error messages but don't see how my program is out of date.

I am also using Mint 17.1 . For whatever it's worth, Mint is itself proving hard to work with. Perhaps Wine can anticipate all kinds of problems from Mint users. Things that work smoothly in Ubuntu don't work in Mint without fixes, and it seems that thousands of big and small changes have been made in the way the entire operating system works just so they can prove they are superior to Ubuntu. My favorite example is the entire apt installation mechanism. They structured it completely differently, and made it harder to use and impossible to fix when something breaks. Meanwhile, Ubuntu's developers have lost their minds and are going the way of Windows 8, forcing its users to leave. Mind, so far I have eventually gotten everything to work in Mint 17.1 except teh ability to display photos in Google Earth, which is probably on account of something Mint's developers have broken; my installation is not itself broken.

I looked into it carefully and I understand taht Wine 1.7 is not ready for general use, it's still bugridden, it is not the 'stable' version, many of the winefixes that you need for isntance to run Rootsmagic aren't ready yet, and moreover half of the software I use specifically won't run in it. Not even on Ubuntu.

I was formerly using the versions of Wine and winetricks that mint software manager installed, but I removed them, using Synaptic, and then deleted their hidden folders from /home. Then reinstalled with what I downloaded from the Wine web site. Then winetricks, which had disappeared from the Wine menu long before I uninstalled it, and had to be run from the terminal, reappeared in the wine menu.

If I didn't uninstall Wine properly before I installed the version that is currently on the Wine web site, I need VERY specific instructions on how to COMPLETELY remove it. The instructions I'm finding are as clear as mud. What I need is the specific commands to use, and what folders to delete - and keep in mind that outside of the /home directory, which could be all Wine uses, Mint places any given folder in a completely different place than Ubuntu does.

If you tell me to install a different winetricks, please direct me to a download link and not tell me to do something with a script that I'd have to be a computer programmer to know what to do with it. The question I asked yesterday, someone pointed me to a page with a very long script on it, which might be winetricks for all I know, but what in in God's name would I do with it. And if he thinks I need to reinstall Wine he never said a word on how to actually get rid of the wrong version.

So now I can't install xml6. Rootsmagic needs XML, because it's based on XML.. It is completely unclear whether having successfully installed xml4 is good enough. I have deduced I didn't have winbind installed and installed it. Here is what happens when I try to install it from the terminal. From withithin winetricks I get status 5 aborting.

I bolded the line where it actually crashes and starts the debugger. This appears to be possibly a testing phase of the install and not the install itself. What I ahve copied and pasted follows about a ton of + set +x +w metadata... lines that aren't even still all in the terminal to be copied and pasted. It looks like that completed and then it ran a test.

Don't see a way to edit this. I finally found the winetricks script on my system (in /home, for the many who can't get anyone to be helpful enough to tell them where it is to edit or replace it with the script people keep providing the url to), and it is the current version. WINETRICKS_VERSION=20141130 . I am not using an outdated version of Winetricks. The notion that I am using an outdated version of Winetricks was a red herring. I evidently do not need to know how to remove and reinstall Wine and all.

However, my efforts did install a second copy of the Winetricks script that was version 20141123. I know I put that one there more recently, likely because that is what the current version of Wine that I downloaded from the Wine page installed; because it was winetricks (1). That wouldn't have caused error messages that I was told in my other post disappeared two years ago.

Does this thing do anything we can't do ourselves manually? I mean, is all I need to do perhaps download the xml4.dll, xml6.dll, and xmllite.dll files and put them in the I think system32 folder or whatever passes for that on Wine that I've found before?

And, does it matter if the Winetricks GUI shows a Windows feature as having been installed? Because I could swear when I've just downloaded whatever, right clicked on it and opened it with the wine loader it installed just fine. No errors, no script quit on me, exited with 5 or whatever. Does that mean it works?

(If you didn't want me to know all of this you might have told me how to reinstall Winetricks instead of sending me to the winetricks script, heh, heh.)

No; it just automates the process. However, some of the workarounds it applies are pretty complicated, so be sure to read everything carefully before trying to do it manually.
