[1.2]StarCraft 2 - Very Slow On Good Computer?

Hi,

Using Wine 1.2 Final on Ubuntu 10.04 32bit.
When running game "StarCraft 2", the game is very slow?

My specs are as follows:
O.S.: Ubuntu 10.04 32bit
CPU: Intel Core2Quad 2.4GHz 4 core CPU
RAM: 4GB DDR2
Graphics Card: nVidia GeForce 8400GS
(nVidia 195.36.24 graphic driver)
Sound Card: Creative Sound Blaster Audigy SE

Any ideas?
Thanks

Jesse

It's not native to linux? Turn everything to low?

where's the good computer? I wouldn't expect much out of a 8400GS and a game as new as Star Craft 2

I have the dual core version of your computer with an 8600gt instead
and on mixed low-medium settings I get a very playable 18-40fps. Not
bad for a cheap two-three year old graphics card. Might be better on
Windows but the bottleneck is the graphics card as I notice SC2
doesn't tax my cpu or the ram.

I would like to play on the better graphics so I'm looking at getting
the modern day equivalent of the 8600 and I'd say that'd be your best
option too.

Time marches on and our good computers become old computers. :(

Hi,

Don't be so quick to blame my computer.
F.E.A.R. 2 runs 60 FPS in a 1024x768 window with settings on medium.
I expect the same with StarCraft 2.

run it at the lowest rez possible with all low settings then.

the bare min nvidia card they list for running in Windows is a 6600GT. a 8400GS actually benchmarks slower than one of those, which means you really are at, or not quite at minimum system requirements... its going to be slightly slower with Wine anyways...

beta played fine with my 6150SE (even though that is below the recommended) so
it may be a driver or settings issue, but probably not a card issue unless
that one in specific has some problems.

Only ways to know for sure are by trying with Windows on the same PC, or by getting someone with a similar setup to do that.

You PC doesn't meet the recommended requirements... (Which is ussualy
what is needed to play at medium graphics on Windows) Wine will slow
down Direct3D graphics as well...

128 MB PCIe NVIDIA® GeForce® 6600 GT or ATI Radeon® 9800 PRO video card or better
His PC _does_ meet the recommended requirements.

Starcraft 2 runs painfully slow compared to Windows. For instance, I have a nVidia Geforce 330M with 512mb of video ram. My friend comes in with his old 8600M GT with 256mb of video ram and plays on Ultra settings with a silky smooth 60fps.

I can't even manage medium. If you google online, my card is supposed to be 2-3x faster than his.

And just for some specs: Linux 2.6.35-rc6 + current wine git.

Code: Select all

System: Host damentz64 Kernel 2.6.35-rc6.dmz.1-liquorix-amd64 x86_64 (64 bit) Distro Debian GNU/Linux squeeze/sid
CPU: Dual core Intel Core i5 M 520 (HT) cache 3072 KB flags (lm nx sse sse2 sse3 sse4_1 sse4_2 ssse3 vmx) clocked at 1199.00 MHz
Graphics: Card nVidia GT216 [GeForce GT 330M] X.Org 1.7.7 Res: [email protected]

Info: Processes 200 Uptime 19:43 Memory 1472.4/3884.7MB Client Shell inxi 1.4.10
I would say that my laptop should meet some maximum requirements list. But the real problem here is that we're seeing the game run at about 1/6th to 1/8th of the speed of running natively on windows (600 to 800% slower). Even counter strike source manages only running about 10-20% slower...

No it dosn't. That is the minimum requirements which ussually allow
you to run it at aboiut 15 fps on lowest detail...

What difference does the nVidia driver versions make? (Seems like most
cards support the 256.* drivers)

Doen't the game have an OpenGL mode (many Blizzard game do) that
should run at full speed?

You're sure that the slowdowns aren't something obvious like a lack of
32-bit OpenGL / too many debug messages? (Posting logs to pastebin if
its long or here overwise might help...)

The resolution ussually have a huge impact on performance...

It should be interesting to see a comparison of StartCraft 2 on the
SAME PC between Windows XP, 32-bit Windows Vista/7, 64-bit Vista/7 and
32-bit Linux (64-bit Linux should work as well, but setting it up with
the right libraries is harder)

On Nvidia make sure you set 'UseGLSL' to disabled (see wiki.winehq.org/UsefulRegistryKeys) it should provide a huge boost (I remember 30% or so in the demo). Disabling this option won't impact image quality because on Nvidia hardware we support shader model 3.0 with and without GLSL (without GLSL it uses nvidia specific opengl extensions).

Before I cause issues: the use of 'UseGLSL=disabled' on Nvidia is basically a workaround. (it won't help ATI and other drivers) Once the cause of the lower performance in GLSL mode is found, GLSL performance should also improve, so in the long run you won't need this option. If someone updates appdb, add such a remark and don't just say 'set UseGLSL=disabled on Nvidia'.

This worked really well for me thanks! From 18fps minimum to 38fps minimum.

Hmm, strange, it makes absolutely no difference here. (Nvidia 9800 green edition + core2duo 8400@ 3Ghz, wine 1.2 and Crossover 9.1).

While Crossover 9.1 is based off Wine 1.2, it is far from being stock Wine 1.2... Theres no guarantee things that work with Wine in a certain way will work the same way with Crossover.

Hi,

I tried that with no notice of speed improvement.
On the lowest graphic settings in the game, I was getting < 30FPS.

I'll be upgrading my video card
from a GeForce 8400 to a GeForce GT 240 tomorrow.
Problem solved!

Thanks...

The 'UseGLSL=disabled' option did not improve the performance on my side. I have the following system:

i7 930 @ 2,8GHz
GeForce 9800 GT
Ubuntu 10.04 64bit
Wine 1.2

Strange thing is, it doesn't matter which graphic settings to use, I get always about 15 fps during missions.

I don't personally own a computer with an nVidia card in it, but results
have been chaotic with the different nVidia driver versions and
different settings. You might want to try a different driver version
and see if you can get the FPS of your game up to 30 or so.

Does anyone with the 256.44 drivers experience any speed improvement when the GLSL trick mentioned above ?

I don't (256.44, GF 9800 GE, core2duo @3Ghz), but downgrading to figure out if it's related to the driver version seems a bit complicated :)

With my setup I generally get 15-20 FPS ingame. (1920*1080, medium settings + high shaders + ultra textures)

I tested with nVidia drivers 195.36 and 256.44, made no difference. The average CPU usage during missions is at 20%, so I think Blizzard has to improve their engine. My system specs are above the recommended pc specs, so it should be possible to get acceptable fps, even if using Wine. There are also some other users complaining about low fps:

http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/forum/topic/248426539

Perhaps I should simply wait for the next patch(es)...

Hi,

even for me it's a bit of a shame...

Got a 470 GTX, Phenom II X4 BE, 8 gigs of ram...
My fear is that something related to sound (pulseaudio?) as well...
Basically in Ultra mode I have to set shaders to low, then I have like 30,40+ FPS. Just setting the shaders to medium decreased it of about 15 FPS...
Btw I play in full HD as screen size.

Given the videocard, that's a bit sad...

Anyway, if anyone else with nVidia card is able to play full HD ultra mode, please post the config and wine settings...

Cheers,
Locked
