Wine latest install fail (mac)

Post by Adriasil »

Okay, so after checking that I had installed the required programs for installation on a mac I downloaded the latest version of wine (wine-1.1.40). I then used:

./compile --verbose --disable-win16

worked fine.

then entered:

make default && make

and all went well. This was until it decided to find this:

See http://wiki.winehq.org/MacOSX/Building

At the minimum, you'll need to set your compiler to produce 32-bit code:

export CFLAGS="-arch i386 -m32"
export CXXFLAGS="$CFLAGS"

Tried it using the macports install instead of the easy install, and I still got the same error message

I'll bet you installed a local copy of OpenAL.framework, but it was only
built for 64-bit. That would explain this error. If you built it
yourself, try building it "universal". Then it will get built for both
32-bit and 64-bit, and you can use it from Wine. If you didn't, ask
whoever did build it for a universal build.

*exasperated sigh* I told you, your local copy of OpenAL.framework was
built *for the wrong architecture*. That is, it was built /64-bit/
instead of /32-bit/. Or, it was built for /PowerPC/ instead of /Intel/.
If you want to use that OpenAL with Wine, you *have* to use a /32-bit
Intel/ OpenAL.

Or, maybe Wine is getting built for the wrong architecture. What does
running:

file /Library/Frameworks/OpenAL.framework/OpenAL

tell you about the OpenAL framework? If it says:

/Library/Frameworks/OpenAL.framework/OpenAL: Mach-O 64-bit dynamic
library x86_64

or

/Library/Frameworks/OpenAL.framework/OpenAL: Mach-O dynamic library ppc

then I'm right and your copy was indeed built for the wrong architecture.

I got that much, thanks... I tried re-installing openAL twice... using the .pkg installed as well as the macports install way.... they both didn't seem to work....

Would you happen to know how to install a 32-bit intel version?

First things first: you're running on an Intel machine with Snow Leopard/10.6, correct? If not, what OS? Which version of Xcode do you have installed? I don't know if any of this has ever been established.

If you've installed OpenAL supprot from the Creative-provided OpenAL_Installer_OSX.dmg... you may have killed your OpenAL framework. Can you install/reinstall the latest Xcode/developer tools that runs on your OS?

As far as MacPorts, it's not affiliated with Wine in any way, but it doesn't appear that the "openal" port has a universal variant. You may be able to force install a 32-bit version, but if you have problems with this, you'll need to ping the MacPorts folks. This is essentially a "recursive force upgrade" that causes a 32-bit OpenAL (and all dependents) to be rebuilt; it may or may not work and may completely destroy your MacPorts packages:

arch -i386 sudo port -Rfuv openal

That's about all the MacPorts support we'll ever offer, I believe. Good luck.

I'm currently running OS 10.5 with xcode version 3.1.4.

The current version of openAL that is installed is the PowerPC version (why this is I have no clue, it may have happened when I first transferred some stuff over from my old G4). I tried running the .dmg and .pkg from creative and that hasn't helped what so ever...

With MacPorts, it's simple to build universal. Just specify the
+universal variant.

Where did you get the .pkg?

I got it off of the dmg file here.

I'll go and try the +universal thing...

That won't work, the Creative-supplied version probably broke things further. There are probably two versions of the OpenAL framework on your computer now, the Mac OS X-supplied universal build and the Creative-supplied PPC-only build. Run the following in a terminal:

ls -ald {/System,}/Library/Frameworks/OpenAL.framework
file {/System,}/Library/Frameworks/OpenAL.framework/OpenAL

The /System/Library/Frameworks/OpenAL.framework directory is the Mac OS X-supplied version, and the one you want to keep. If you have a framework in /Library/System/Framework, this is probably the wrong one. You can move it with:

sudo mv /Library/Frameworks/OpenAL.framework{,.disabled}

Don't install the Creative package. It won't work since it's PPC-only and not required on 10.5+.

Please read my entire message, and then read this:

http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/ ... /ld.1.html

"The default framework search path is /Library/Frameworks then /System/Library/Frameworks."

The linker is finding the PPC-only version first. Move that framework out of the way and attempt to compile again. You've been given everything you need to make this work.

Thanks a heap, did everything now and it all works! Installing as we speak.

Sorry for distracting you, and probably making you fairly frustrated.

Thanks again!

I'm glad it's working for you, but Charles gave you the exact same answer yesterday that I sent today. There's only so much hand-holding you can expect since everyone here is basically volunteering. I mean no disrespect by this, but you need to be mindful when you're asking questions/running into problems. If someone with more experience than you sends instructions, you need to follow them if you expect help.
