windows XP versus wine

Post by Jörg Kühne »

Hallo wine user team,

I am not sure if I need an original XP version to work with wine. In other words. Can I use wine without installing XP, for example. Because I have several old applications, which I would like to run on linux together with wine. Would wine emulates the hardware like a virtual machine, or takes wine the local hardware to deal with?

Thanks for your answer in advanced.

best regards

No, you do not need a windows installation. Wine translates the
Windows API calls into native calls for you. Check the AppDB
(appdb.winehq.org) to see if your app is listed and any issues you may
encounter.

Hello again,

not all of them are listed in FAQ. As far as I have seen, there is nothing about hardware emulation. Is it possible, if I have the newest hardware that the artificial windows XP from wine doesn't run on it, or emulates wine a older hardware which is compatible?

regards,

Joerg

AFAIK, Wine doesn't emulate hardware. If your hardware doesn't work in Linux, it won't work in Wine.

"Hardware emulation" questions might be answered here:
http://wiki.winehq.org/Debunking_Wine_Myths

The name Wine itself traditionally stands for "Wine Is Not an Emulator",
so most people don't have to ask.
