Error running TalkNow

Post by Vacuum Joe »

Hello everyone,

I'm running Wine wine-0.9.55 on Ubuntu 710. I'm trying to run EuroTalk Interactive language learning software. It installs and starts fine, flawlessly, but when I start an exercise, I keep on hitting:

operating system : Windows XP Service Pack 2

executable : TalkNow.exe
exec. date/time : 2002-10-23 13:40
version : 1.1.9.1
exception class : TEMException
exception message : MCI Error: There is an undetectable problem in loading the specified device driver.

I think this is something related to the sound system.

Is there a Wine configuration that might fix this, or is this a bug in in Wine? If so, how do I file it as a bug? I'm pretty new to Wine and don't know much about debugging it. It seems like this program is very very close to working, which would be great, because they have a whole bunch of language learning titles.

Thanks

Run 'winecfg' and select sound options. You might try using OSS instead of ALSA, setting driver to emulation, or disabling sound altogether.

I checked that. It's set to ALSA, as it should be (for a long time now). It's not using emulation. Sound works. When I click "test" on the winecfg sound setup panel, I hear the test sound. I'm using the package that is in the Wine repos for Ubuntu. I'll be upgrading to 0.9.56 as soon as it hits that repos (probably in the next couple of days) and I'll try again, but obviously, this is an old bug in some old part of Wine.

Anything else this could be?

I actually tried this whole thing one year ago:

http://crossover.codeweavers.com/piperm ... 10637.html

getting almost exactly the same error. This is an old version of the program, from 2002, so it's definitely not using any fancy new APIs. Whatever this bug is, it's probably affecting other similar programs.

Thanks for any tips on this. Let me know if there are any tests I can do or anything else I can do that would help debug this.

See if tweaking/disabling sound allows the app to run. If not, the problem may lie elsewhere.

TalkNow EuroTalk

Post by basswe »

Use first link for DUTCH version :
http://eurotalk.com/nl/support?product= ... =MCI+Error

For the English version:
http://eurotalk.com/en/support?product= ... =MCI+Error

Install the loaded update for windows7 and TalkNow works without MCI Error.

Works for me, Ubuntu 11.04 and wine 1.3.25

Thanks a lot basswe, that worked for me too. But I had to install wine1.3 - the installation of the update was not working with wine1.2.

(I am running Kubuntu 11.04).
