program thinks another instance is open

I'm trying to work on getting the english version of qq (not the 2009 version that won't even install) and it installs alright, but on the applications start it says that the "max number of instances are already open." The terminal output states:

err:rpc:I_RpcReceive we got fault packet with status 0x3e6
err:ole:ifproxy_release_public_refs IRemUnknown_RemRelease failed with error 0x800706be

Is there a way to force it to bypass this check, or is it just kinda stuck for now? I realize that pidgin etc. do work, but my parents are insistent on being able to use the "real" qq and the chinese language linux one is kinda hard to understand.

Have you tried restarting the computer following the installation?

yup, I've tried it over a couple of days, same response. My first guess is that it isn't checking for other programs correctly, which is leading to the error. I'm not quite sure how someone would fix that, though.
