Gecko problems under Debian Sid (AMD64)

Post by Zaskar »

Im running an AMD64 version of Debian Sid. Wine runs windows apps fine, but when running an application for the first time like Steam, it asked to download gecko as an web browser engine.

Prettymuch the problem is, is that it doesn't work, web pages in steam dont load and I get an error when trying to display them.

doing "wine iexplore http://www.google.com" brings up the error "www.google.com could not be found. Please check the name and try again."

Could it be that there is this some kind of current issue with the current version in Sid, or an AMD64 compatibility issue? (Unstable packages sometimes have issues, im cool with that) Or should it be working fine and there is something I may be able to do about it?
On my old standard 32bit install a few months ago I remember not getting the web pages in Steam to show also (but diddnt get error messages)

Thanks guys.

I don't know but when I need gecko in Dragon NaturallySpeaking it downloads and works for me with 0.9.59 WINE.
I'm running Ubuntu Hardy Heron on a 32 machine, so that doesn't help much...

:/ that link doesnt work

[edit]

tried the one from kegel.org and it DL'd gecko over, but the pages dont display now, just get a white screen (instead of gray, accompanied with an error)

Steam still doesnt show internet windows, and Steam games that have internet splash screens when joining a server still crash out :/

Problem solved, did alotta digging and found wine on x64 OS's require lib32nss-mdns, and Debian doesn't have it as a dependency so it doesn't auto install when apt installing Wine.

Still crash on some Steam game servers due to something they do in their web page (probably flash or something) but on most its fixed now.

omg. I typed a completely random URL there, sorry.

I see you've solved your problem, though. Time to add your note to the faq
if it's not already there...
