Problems on recent versions of Wine - MS Office 2000 and Sho

Post by Phil Reynolds »

I don't make that much use of Wine but do sometimes need real MS Word,
and sometimes like to play some of the games on the shockwave.com site.
However, there have been a number of upgrades recently to Wine and these
have now stopped working with the following symptoms:

Office:

Running applications from an existing install says "This application must
be installed to run. Please run Setup from the location where you
originally installed the application." - also a fresh install fails as
stated in another thread.

Shockwave:

Calling up www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome in Firefox works, but if I
try to access a game from the site, the logo appears with the message
that Shockwave Player is now installing, but it does not proceed any
further. This is with the latest Shockwave and has also been tested on a
fresh install.

Everything else I do with Wine is working at the moment.

Which version of Word?
What version of Wine are you using now, and what was the last version
that worked?
What version of Linux are you running?

Thanks,

Which version of Word?
Office 2000's standard one.
What version of Wine are you using now, and what was the last version
that worked?
0.9.58. Don't know what the last version that worked is as I have not
run it enough to remember. Sorry that is not a lot of help but it was
probably 0.9.42 or earlier that last worked for sure.
What version of Linux are you running?
Debian etch (stable).
Thanks for the info. (Don't forget to cc the list next time, please.)

The AppDB thread http://appdb.winehq.org/commentview.php ... adId=32046 contains some information which relates to this problem - it will be updated as I make progress with the problems.

Note that there is a Microsoft KB article - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/298829/en-us - which describes exactly this problem and the cause is incorrect or missing registry entries.

I can confirm that recent versions of Wine do not create the registry entries described in this knowledge-base article - the built-in misexec will only create Windows 95/98/ME-type registry entries irrespective of the Wine configuration.
