When will a Fully Working Version of Wine for Mint 21/Ubuntu 22 Come Out?
When will a Fully Working Version of Wine for Mint 21/Ubuntu 22 Come Out?
Just upgraded to Linux Mint 21 and having a lot of difficulty getting any apps to work correctly (EAC, Tag & Rename, Foobar 2000) under a version of Wine that will install by:
https://wiki.winehq.org/Ubuntu (stable release not available, 7.0 development does not work for me)
or by the Mint Package Manager (Installs Wine 6.0.3).
Biggest issue I have found seems to be recognition of the CD drive.
Any idea when the 7.0.1 stable that is mentioned will come out for Mint 21 / Ubuntu 22?? I have the Linux partition (without Wine ever installed) cloned and ready to go. Wanting to finish up my new install so I can transfer files.

Re: When will a Fully Working Version of Wine for Mint 21/Ubuntu 22 Come Out?
I know the stable maintainer is planning a release, but I don't know exactly when it will be.
Why don't you try the current wine-devel or wine-staging package? If whatever problem you are seeing has been fixed, it will be in one of those branches first, and there's no guarantee the fix will be backported to the 7.0.x stable branch.

Re: When will a Fully Working Version of Wine for Mint 21/Ubuntu 22 Come Out?
I did try 7.0 devel and had big issues. Figured it just wasn't ready for my distro. Puzzling thing is the fair amount of instuctions on internet for wine 7.0 on Mint 21 and Ubuntu 22 starting a fair ways back. It's like Wine 7.0 was pulled for more work because of what I am seeing - either that or changes in the Linux late in the game caused issues with the Wine. Just don't know....
Re: When will a Fully Working Version of Wine for Mint 21/Ubuntu 22 Come Out?
I think I will be go ahead and try the Staging version. I have already tried Development, but like you said, any mods should show up there first. If no work, no biggie - I'll just restore my old partition.

Is this the reason apt can't locate winehq-stable after `sudo apt install --install-recommends winehq-stable`?

@dimesio: thanks about your explain for dev = stable.
(I was going to post to say that there was no stable version.)

Hi guys
WTLB works perfectly on Arch. I still had a ly.iso copy on my desktop and I could install the program on Arch.
Works fine. If Arch scares you try something user friendly like EndeavourOS

What I don't understand is that if there are .debs here: https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/dists/jammy/ apt doesn't see them. Is there anyway to manually download these files and install them? I'm looking at it and there's a bunch of .debs, but without knowing what to do (or a script to install them) I'm not sure what, if anything, can be done with them. I really don't want to install anything other than a release version now because I will never remember to go back and change it later.

In looking at that directory again, it appears that there are no files that are NOT marked winehq-devl-* wine-devl-* winehq-staging-* wine-staging-* so that probably explains it...iconoclast hero wrote: ↑Fri Sep 23, 2022 9:40 am What I don't understand is that if there are .debs here: https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/dists/jammy/ apt doesn't see them. Re: When will a Fully Working Version of Wine for Mint 21/Ubuntu 22 Come Out?
I do admit, I am a little bit surprised that there's no 7.0 stable release for Ubuntu 22.04 LTS - it's not exactly a secret when 22.04 LTS was coming out or the fact that it was coming out. With that said, normally I wait until LTS release + 1 year to make sure all packages are available for it by the time I'm ready to install the current LTS version - this time I didn't since I got a brand new mobo + CPU this year (the year of the LTS release) and didn't want to install an older LTS version.dimesio wrote: ↑Tue Sep 13, 2022 6:21 pm I know the stable maintainer is planning a release, but I don't know exactly when it will be.

Why don't you try the current wine-devel or wine-staging package? If whatever problem you are seeing has been fixed, it will be in one of those branches first, and there's no guarantee the fix will be backported to the 7.0.x stable branch.
Since I normally wait until LTS relaese + 1 year but didn't this time, I feel I must ask: is this normal in terms of how long it takes for the stable version of wine to be released for the current LTS version, or is this taking longer than it usually does (22.04 came out in April and we're almost in October)?
Re: When will a Fully Working Version of Wine for Mint 21/Ubuntu 22 Come Out?
Wine packages for Ubuntu are automatically built after a new Wine version is released. When Wine 7.0 came out, Ubuntu 22.04 did not yet exist, so no package was created for it. The packages will be built when an update to Wine is released, version 7.0.1.
Usually there are three or four point releases for Wine Stable.
This year there isn't update to Wine Stable yet. I will try to explain why.
Wine Stable has certain requirements. The most important one is: It must not contain any new regressions (not break currently running applications). The improvements to Wine this year are very complex, making cherry picking good patches very difficult. Add some lack of time and you have the situation we are in now.
Right now, there are three options:
- Install and pin winehq-devel
- Try to install the Wine 7.0 packages from Kinetic
- Build Wine 7.0 yourself

That's pretty interesting and good to know, thanks. So it isn't just me installing LTS a year earlier than I usually do, there is something more to it.jkfloris wrote: ↑Fri Sep 23, 2022 3:24 pm Wine packages for Ubuntu are automatically built after a new Wine version is released. The fact that you say try to install the Wine 7.0 packages is a bit concerning in terms of feasibility/ease of install/etc.
I'll just stick with Wine 6.0.3 from the Ubuntu repos for now until 7.0.1 comes out (hopefully it does come out this year at some point), along with wine-devel and wine-staging.
Thanks again for the information.
Re: When will a Fully Working Version of Wine for Mint 21/Ubuntu 22 Come Out?
Installing packages built for another distribution is not recommended. Sometimes it can work and sometimes you can't resolve the dependencies. The fact that you say try to install the Wine 7.0 packages is a bit concerning in terms of feasibility/ease of install/etc.
In this case, I haven't tried to install Wine 7.0 from Kinetic on Jammy. So I can't tell you if it works.
If you don't have experience with manual dependency troubleshooting or are uncomfortable with it, I would not recommend this.

Re: When will a Fully Working Version of Wine for Mint 21/Ubuntu 22 Come Out?
OK here's more info - I have dual boot set up. Old version of Linux is Mint Mate 19 64bit with Wine 4.01 bionic both 32bit and 64bit. It works and has worked fine with EAC, Foobar2000, Tag/Rename, and others for several years now. Trying to go to Linux Mint Mate 21 64bit on fresh separate new install on a second drive. Have image of Mate 21 partition so can restore to pre-wine-install condition.
Have tried Wine 6.0.3 32/64 bit from both Mint repository (using Synaptic Package Manager) and WineHQ repositories (by terminal). Have also tried installing the Wine 7 Staging and Development versions by terminal. After each install I tried to add EAC 1.6. On 6.0.3, both installs would not complete, needing Net 2.0 and winecfg did not ask to install Mono. I installed Mono complete from MInt Repository and still no install of EAC. Also said something about ASPI layer. On the Wine 7, winecfg asks to install mono and EAC installs but it can't find CD drive which makes the software unuseable. Same thing with TAG and Rename - can't find CD drive.
I feel like Wine 7 would work if the software could find the CD drive. Not sure about the 6.0.3. Is this just a configuration error by the installer? Can anyone help with setting up Wine 7 to use the CD drive in Mint Mater 21?

Re: When will a Fully Working Version of Wine for Mint 21/Ubuntu 22 Come Out?
Also I should note that I have both VMwarePlayer and VirtualBox installed to run a couple of applications that won't run any other way. I'm beginning to wonder if there might be conflicts regarding use of the CD drive between these and Wine? This wasn't a problem with Mint 19 and Wine 4.0.1
Re: When will a Fully Working Version of Wine for Mint 21/Ubuntu 22 Come Out?
OK my problem is solved for my Linux Mint 21 upgrade. Installed Wine 7.1.9 staging from WineHQ site per https://www.linuxcapable.com/how-to-ins ... Repository. Installed Winetricks from Mint 21 repositories. Used Winetricks to install Net2.0 and Net4.0 and make a 32 bit Wine prefix. Used WINECFG to select WinXP as default. Then installed EAC 1.6, Foobar 1.6.13, and Tag & Rename 3.8.5. All work just fine again. Note I did rename the CDRDAO directory in EAC to CDRDAO_X in order to keep an error message from popping up on start. Nevertheless, EAC works fine since doesn't need CDRDAO. Most of this workaround info was found in the EAC 1.6 appllication database on this web site (for an older version of Wine and a different Linux Distro). https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager. ... &iId=39867 Thanks much for that! Being a novice at this, anyone care to comment what exactly was happening. Two of these three programs are old 32 bit Windows programs. The Foobar 1.6.13 is new and supposed to be 64 bit. Now EAC finds and configures for my CD drive just fine, but Foobar and Tag/Rename still cannot find it. In reterospect I believe it always ran this way in Wine for me.

Re: When will a Fully Working Version of Wine for Mint 21/Ubuntu 22 Come Out?
Just figured out how to get at files on other partitions and (for example MP3s) on the CD drive, from within the software that is running under Wine. Just go to /media/<user>/ from Z drive within the software (such as Tag & Rename) and click on the appropriate partition. Now I'm really happy! Only thing is that Foobar 2000 still can't open an audio CD from its menu (but it never did for me in Wine before).
Re: When will a Fully Working Version of Wine for Mint 21/Ubuntu 22 Come Out?
I'm comfortable with manual dependency troubleshooting but I think I'm still gonna hold off on trying Wine 7.0.jkfloris wrote: ↑Sat Sep 24, 2022 3:52 amInstalling packages built for another distribution is not recommended. I must admit, I'm honestly a little bit surprised that it's already almost 2023, which means Wine 8.0 stable will be coming out in the coming months, and Wine 7.0 is still not really available for Ubuntu 22.04.
edit: Okay, now I'm even more confused, it looks like it was available on November 8, but my package manager never picked it up I guess? https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubunt ... ary-amd64/
edit 2: I think I see what happened. I only had wine installed, and not winehq-stable installed, so I had to explicitly install winehq-stable.
edit 3: Installing winehq-stable made it so that a bunch of 32-bit libraries are pending removal, I'm going to go back to wine 6.0.3: https://i.imgur.com/UACZOGL.png

Re: When will a Fully Working Version of Wine for Mint 21/Ubuntu 22 Come Out?
I upgraded to xubuntu 22.10 and I think I run into some similar problems
first I tried :
then tried
Tried manually to install libavcodec59:i386 but that wants me to delete all applications including XFCE, gimp, vlc, code, dropbox, spotify, thunar,... to name a few.
writing it down actually it feels more like a ubuntu issue
first I tried :
Code: Select all
$ sudo apt install --install-recommends winehq-staging=8.0~rc2~kinetic-1[
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
winehq-staging : Depends: wine-staging (= 8.0~rc2~kinetic-1)
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
Code: Select all
sudo apt install wine-staging=8.0~rc2~kinetic-1
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
libasound2-plugins:i386 : Depends: libavcodec59:i386 (>= 7:5.0)
writing it down actually it feels more like a ubuntu issue
Re: When will a Fully Working Version of Wine for Mint 21/Ubuntu 22 Come Out?
Check if the version of libavcodec59:i386 that will be installed is the same as that of libavcodec59:amd64
Replace the 64-bit version with the official Ubuntu version if necessary.
Code: Select all
apt policy libavcodec59:i386 libavcodec59:amd64

Re: When will a Fully Working Version of Wine for Mint 21/Ubuntu 22 Come Out?
it is the same version :
I fear that somehow in my current install there is a weird dependency
I installed wine on my laptop which also has a xbuntu, and there is no problem at all
Code: Select all
$ apt policy libavcodec59:i386 libavcodec59:amd64
libavcodec59:i386:
Installed: (none)
Candidate: 7:5.1.1-1ubuntu1
Version table:

Then it's not libavcodec59.
Have you added any other repositories to your system besides the official Ubuntu and the WineHQ repository?
Or do you have packages installed that don't belong (anymore) to a repository.

Code: Select all
apt policy
Code: Select all
LANG=C apt list --installed | grep '\[installed,local\]'

Re: When will a Fully Working Version of Wine for Mint 21/Ubuntu 22 Come Out?
yes, I checked that
Even removed all repositories, removed other software.
I gave in and just did a full re-install
And with a clean install , no issues at all, even after adding my other repositories again (pipewire, docker, dropbox, sublimetext, ...)
currently running wine-8.0-rc2 on xubuntu 22.10.
I still will add some new repositories , if I run into the problem , I will post it here

Re: When will a Fully Working Version of Wine for Mint 21/Ubuntu 22 Come Out?
Ok that was it, I
I had exported my installed apps in a txt file and in there I found this (must have missed it before when checking)
libavcodec58/now 7:4.4.2-0ubuntu0.22.04.1 amd64 [installed,local]
although it is libavcodec58 not libavcodec59 , but could have been causing it
thank you for the info!
