PlayStation 3

Post by Vermin »

As some of you probably already know, the PlayStation 3 supports Linux. That brings a question to me: can I run Wine on a PlayStation 3?

It's got a Cell processor, which I understand is a PowerPC variant
rather than an x86 - so Windows code won't run natively. Does anyone
know how usable Darwine for PowerPC is for running x86 apps? That
might give some idea of how much work it is to get x86 Windows apps
running on a PS3.

As Linux itself is near dog-slow on the PS3 once you get into a GUI (due
to 256MB RAM, no native video access), I sincerely doubt that if Darwine
runs at all it runs at a acceptable speed.

Playstation 3 is power PC (ppc) not x86. So the binaries certainly will
not. Applications, compiled using Winelib might. However, I would expect
to have to get down and dirty and fix some issues as the ppc is big
endian (actually it can be configured either endian but is normally run
big endian) and the x86 is little endian.

I have been working on a few things, and myself and fellow YDL users have managed to get WINE working on PS3 to a rudemntary level, but the graphics drivers in use are still developmental

You could post a guide on the Wine wiki to document the details incase anyone else is interested.

Sure you could use Qemu its binary loader to run x86 wine on a ps3 but it won't bring you much. Likely you want to use it for 3d gaming and that really won't work well. Second you don't have access to all GPU functionality anyway forget about it.

Write a petition to Sony.

PS3 Linux doesn't have full access to ps3 hardware. So you can manage to get it working under ps3linux - but it won't help you in native ps3 games.

Also, it will work excruciatingly slow with linux games - because of the hardware problem.
