Hi, Is there anyway that Silent Hunter 3 will work on Linux using wine. When I searched the database it looked hopeful although entries were old but on trying it I have had no luck. On trying to install the game I get the error "1608:unable to create install driver instance, return code 2147221164". This happens as soon as I try to install it. Is there no hope or is it worth persevering? Any ideas very welcome.

Is there any way this will work - Silent Hunter 3?
Re: Is there any way this will work - Silent Hunter 3?
Hi Steve,... Any ideas very welcome.
The simple rule of thumb on any forum is: "the less information you give - the less likely you are likely you are to be helped or are help-able!!"!!
- I don't what version of Wine you are trying Silent Hunter 3 out on.
- I don't know what Linux distribution you are using.
- I don't even know what media version of Silent Hunter 3 you are trying to install (Digital Download, Steam or Retail DVD). Plus what game version.
- Read the Wine HQ FAQ ? That's pretty essential really ...
- Used the official download links for Wine ?
FYI:
winehq-devel is more "vanilla Wine" ;
winehq-staging has a whole set of additional patches applied - in order to "improve" Windows application compatibility. - If you are using a 64-bit OS - then will need the 32-bit libraries for your graphics drivers, etc.
Silent Hunter 3 is a 32-bit game - it will need to run in a 32-bit context (even on a 64-bit OS and 64-bit capable CPU).
If you get a console trace - from running Silent Hunter 3. Could you post it here (if short - use
Code: Select all
tags!!) or (if it's long) at a pastebin site - like bpaste.net , pastie.org , etc.
So supply some more info ... Then we might be able to push this forwards a bit!! 8)
