Aoe 2 Running hellishly slow

My Laptop which has 2Gb of Ram and a 2.7 Single Core Processor which is running debian 8 and wine 1.8.1 cannot run the original AOE2 to playable standards beyond the menu it operates at 10 fps and lags to hell. Any assistance is appreciated
