Wine Windows Program Loader appears not to work at all.

Post by Onetimer »

I'm running on the newest verison of Xubuntu, and I installed WINE to play games I otherwise would not be able to. I installed WINE and followed the instructions on usage from Wikihow (http://www.wikihow.com/Use-Wine-on-Linux) so if it turns out that guide is outdated/totally fucking wrong then that's probably the source of my issue. Anyways I followed the guide up until the part where it says that using Wine Windows Program Loader will run the game/app. When I try to open the .exe with WWPL, nothing happens. No window, no icon, no indication that anything is happening. If anyone could help me on this it would be very much appreciated.

You didn't mention what Wine version you're using. If it's not the latest development release, upgrade.

Try running the installer from a terminal, and if it still won't install, post the terminal output. http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#run_from_terminal

I'm using 1.4. I will try running it from the terminal, and then I'll come back to you.

This is what I'm getting so far. I haven't really worked that much in Terminal, so I could have messed something up somewhere.

These instructions(http://www.wikihow.com/Use-Wine-on-Linux) you have are only good with applications that are platinum rated. Zero extras, Zero tweaking required. Thinking the majority of applications are not platinum rated its not wrong is abridge to the point of being almost worthless. Does have two things wrong 11 and 12 where to search. Google + wine is not a very wise move. Google normally leads to out of date and incorrect instructions. Same with blog.google.com.

To be correct number 11 should be check http://appdb.winehq.org "Browse Apps" on the side to search.
number 12 should be check the faq http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ This is our collected guide of common problems and solutions.
number 13 should be post help request in http://forum.winehq.org.

They got the first 10 instructions correct. At least you made it to number 13 ok.

Wine reports its issues to console not to graphical.

http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#get_log This is your best friend.

Just like dimesio stated you did not mention wine version. If you don't mention this we will normally ask for wine version before proceeding. If it not 1.6 or 1.7.x something we will normally ask you to upgrade before we start walking threw debuging.

If application does not have appdb page do seriously consider putting in request for one to be made. Gives a nice location to place what you did to get applications to work.

Onetimer just to be nice to us support people if WWPL is an acronym or some other shorted version of a name do state the full name at least once. WWPL(what ever it is) appdb normally has games and applications entered as full names not shortened form. Also if we do need to google search for related windows errors lot of cases we need the full name as well.

In the future, please copy and paste terminal output as plain text rather than posting a screenshot.

You need to upgrade Wine to at least 1.6; versions older than that are no longer supported.

What your terminal output shows is that you did not follow the instructions I linked you to. Please reread them and try again.

I went to the Ubuntu packages, (because Xubuntu works as a reconfiguration of Ubuntu, and 90% of packages are interchangable between these two) and 1.4 was the latest version shown that wasn't in beta. I also tried to follow the instructions you linked to the best of my ability.

Onetimer you have to add the wine ppa repository then you will get access to 1.6 and 1.7.x wine.

https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-wine/+archive/ppa

Yes default ubuntu repositories no longer provide packages we support. In fact due to kernel updates and other security updates 1.4 on most Ubuntu relations is broken. Moving to 1.6 if we are lucky will solve the problems.
