64-bit on mac 10.6

I searched, and couldn't find any answers since 2010. But I'd think this is a common question:

I want to run 64-bit windows apps on my mac (a bit old-school; it's running 10.6 SL).

In 2010, there was a clear statement saying mac doesn't play nicely with 64-bit. Has that changed?

That's very strange, because the Darwin kernel is natively 64-bit...
