Wine on Tiger

Post by mrivera »

I'm almost certain I installed Wine correctly, but when I try to get a Windows program working it doesn't happen. The program I'm trying to install is Arena 10 (a simulation program). I've attached some screen shots. The first one is when I completed the wine install, 2 through 6 show when I tried to install the program. If you could tell me what steps to take to fix these problems, or point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it very much. Another question, how do I know if I have X11 installed correctly? Also, setup.exe appears in almost any Windows program, how do I get it specific to the program in question? Do I click and drag the file into terminal so it reads wine "whatever I drag into terminal here"? Thanks again.

Since you are using Tiger, you'll need to install x11 from the Tiger Install DVD. It's the Optional Installs.mpkg file.

And you may need to start wine with:

Code: Select all

DYLD_FALLBACK_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/X11/lib wine ./my.exe
The drag and drop method you describe definitely works most of the time, but some applications must be run from the directory. using your example:

Code: Select all

cd /Users/michaelrivera/Desktop/ARENA10Softwarepack
wine setup.exe
should work for you.

I got X11 from here:

http://nnucomputerwhiz.com/install-x11- ... l-dvd.html

I downloaded it and ran the installer. Is there anything else I have to do? I ran the installer for x11sdk.pkg and x11user.pkg.

Thanks for the reply.

You'll know for certain that you have x11 installed if you go to your /applications/utilities folder and see x11. I'd recommend dragging it to your dock and launching it before launching wine. On Tiger, I think this is required.

You probably also have to add a display variable to the .profile file in your home directory.

Assuming you haven't done much in macports, this should work:

Code: Select all

export PATH=/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:$PATH
export DISPLAY=:0.0
Most of this is actually from the macports wiki:

https://trac.macports.org/wiki/InstallingMacPorts

Hope that helps.

Found X11, opened it up and was able to run the installer for Arena. It says I have it successfully installed but I'm not sure how to open it or where I would find it. I tried using cd ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/ to list my programs installed but I just get this.

michael-riveras-computer:~ michaelrivera$ cd ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/
michael-riveras-computer:~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files michaelrivera$

I'm totally new to this stuff and I'm not 100% on what I'm doing, as you can see, so if you could dumb it down as much as possible I would really appreciate it.

you got the first part right, navigating to the program files directory, then you'll have to see what is in it. You can do that with an 'ls' command:

Code: Select all

cd ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/
ls
That will list the contents of the Program Files directory. Then 'cd' (change directory) to the directory that contains the program you want (probably Arena 10 or the name of the software developer). You'll probably see common files and internet explorer, and those aren't the ones you want.

Then ls again to see the contents of that directory. You'll probably see something like Arena10.exe and you should be able to then run 'wine arena10.exe' and get things started.

Terminal does not understand a space in a folder or file name, it thinks your ending the command and adding another argument.

if you want to CD into Rockwell Software directory, you either need to use quotes, or use an escape (backslash) before the space so it knows you really mean a space in the name.

cd Rockwell\ Software

or

cd "Rockwell Software"

then keep cd down in there until you get to the folder that has the actual exe file in it to run with Wine.

I don't even have a clue what your trying to do.. the commands you are entering make no sense at all... its not wonder your computer is confused.

I think you need to find some tutorials on how to use Terminal, and how directory structures work.

If you took a quick look to a tutorial on how to use the terminal, you
would have understood what was happening.

If you look at the terminal there is the prompt (some text at the
beginning of the line) and what you type.
Your prompt look like : michael-riveras-computer:~ michaelrivera$
Which tells you :
- the name of your machine : michael-riveras-computer (not useful for
what follows)
- the current folder : ~ (really useful)
- your username : michaelrivera (not useful for what follows)

Let's now see what you have done :
1) opening a new terminal
prompt : "michael-riveras-computer:~ michaelrivera$"
-> you are in the ~ folder (aka. home)
2) run "cd ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/" (aka. change directory to ...)
prompt : "michael-riveras-computer:~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files michaelrivera$"
-> you are in the "~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files" folder as you
requested, congratulations
3) run "ls" (aka. list content)
prompt : no change, directory is still "~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files"
-> In the list you can see "Rockwell Software" which gives you the
_exact_ name you are looking for
4) run "cd "Rockwell Software""
prompt : "michael-riveras-computer:~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Rockwell Software michaelrivera$"
-> you are in the "Rockwell Software" sub folder as you requested,
congratulations

Then... some random commands without any real meaning. I guess a mix
of "And now what ?" and of pure panic "What is this terminal thing ?
What is it asking me ?"

It should have gone like this :
5) would be another "ls" which would give you either :
- another folder name : go to 6)
- an exe name (something which end up in .exe) : got to 7)
6) Bascially like 4), type "cd" followed by the exact folder name in
double quotes and then go back to 5)
7) Type "wine" followed by the exact file name in double quotes
(including what is before the .exe and the .exe itself)

But you would have understood all that and I would not have had to
write those details if you took the time to go through the first steps
of any terminal tutorial. It would take you less than 5 minutes to
complete and make like easier for you and the people trying to help
you...

I got in! You guys rule. Now I'm having trouble with the program itself. I did a search and came up with this...

http://forum.winehq.org/viewtopic.php?t=13210

Only difference there is he is running 12.0 and I have 10.0.

Looked like it was the same thing that happened to me so I tried to uninstall and reinstall, no dice. I uninstalled by using arenas uninstaller, do I have to run one through terminal? If so, how? Here's what terminals giving me..

The other part of the thread you mentioned also recommended upgrading to a newer version of wine.

In macports, the stable version of wine is called wine, and the latest development version is called wine-devel.

So in terminal, you'll need to enter the following commands to deactivate wine and install wine-devel:

Code: Select all

sudo port deactivate wine
sudo port install wine-devel
and wait for about an hour...

And you already know how to delete your .wine directory so I won't go into that.

/opt/local/var/macports/logs/_opt_local_var_macports_sources_rsync.macports.org_release_tarballs_ports_x11_wine-devel/wine-devel/main.log

it tells you right there that is made a log file...

try typing in the word open then copy and pasting that path...

open /opt/local/var/macports/logs/_opt_local_var_macports_sources_rsync.macports.org_release_tarballs_ports_x11_wine-devel/wine-devel/main.log

and it should open Console.app and show you the log.. and you scroll down near the end to find out what the actual error was.

Thanks for the reply! I got a huge log in console. I'm not exactly sure what I'm looking for here.

Does this patch help? (Copy and paste into a plain text file, save it, and then apply with patch(1) like so:

patch -p1 <patchfile.txt

or git apply if you're building from git:

git apply patchfile.txt

from the wine source directory. Replace 'patchfile.txt' with whatever you saved the patch file as.)

No, I did something wrong. Apple Mail has this annoying tendency to trim leading whitespace, which is great for ordinary text but bad for patches (which depend on the leading spaces being there if there's no plus or minus sign). I have no idea how to fix that, and I have half a mind to file a radar about it. So let's try this again, and this time, I'm going to attach the patch to my email (as opposed to copying and pasting into the body). Hopefully Apple Mail won't mangle the patch, and you'll still be able to get it (if the mailing list software doesn't strip it).

That means the patch was successfully applied. (To avoid that error, by the way, the patch file needs to end in a blank line. TextEdit will not do this for you.) In any case, try building Wine now. The error you saw last time you tried building it should be gone. If this works, I'll try to get this patch merged into Wine from Git (so hopefully from Wine 1.3.30 beyond you won't have to patch it like this again).
