Hi,

I tried that with no notice of speed improvement.
On the lowest graphic settings in the game, I was getting < 30FPS.

I'll be upgrading my video card
from a GeForce 8400 to a GeForce GT 240 tomorrow.
Problem solved!

Thanks...

Hi,

Installed my new fanless nVidia GeForce GT 240 1GB today.
I can run StarCraft 2 in Wine 1.2
in a 1024x768 window on "Ultra" settings!!!

Thanks!

Jesse
Jesse, I tried, but for me it's the same.
If I use 1024x768 or 1920x1080 with Ultra settings the results are always the same: 13 FPS, unless I set shaders to Low, then it's about 35~40+ FPS.

What's your spec/config?
Any particular option?
What's your audio setup?

I see you're using 32 bits Linux.
Do you use any particular setting in wine itself for direct3d?
which audio devices do you use? USB? Analog?

I do use Pulseaudio too with no problem. (I just add to install the backports alsa modules because my audio chipset was not supported properly with the default drivers -- which could cause issues such as : no alsa audio at the same time as pulse audio, etc).

I use a USB mic+headphones with PA.
For some strange reason sometime when I start my pc it happens (like 1%) that sound components (motherboard and USB) aren't found.
I tried running SC2 without audio basically and I had like 70% more FPS!
I know it's weird, but with any video setting I had a lot more FPS (like 30 FPS with Ultra mode in full HD)...

That's why I'm suspecting that with Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit something is different with PA...

My fear is that main renderer thread in SC2 somehow tries to sync with sound thread (if sound rendering is multithreaded btw) and as seen as that thread maybe is waiting to 'publish' sound and might not be async, it does stall the renderer thread, thus lowering FPS a lot.

What do you think?

Ema : that's definitely an interesting clue. Well, did you just try to remove pulseaudio temporarily to see if it makes any difference ? (I use a 64 bits distro too).

I cannot do the test myself anymore, I lent my account to someone else b/c I don't have the time to play right now.

Problem is that I fear to uninstall PA from my system... do you know if there's another way to do it? What do you think?

Replace that 8400GS with at least a GTS 250, or 9800GT. And overclock that quad core from 2.4Ghz on up to 3.6Ghz if you can. If not, I know it'll at least do 3.2Ghz. Raise the RAM up a bit too, but not too awful far cause its probly not overclocking RAM. Then see if the game runs any smoother. My bet is that it will.

Hi,

I am good now...

I upgraded from
an nVidia GeForce 8400GS 512MB
to an nVidia GeForce GT 240 1GB

Can now run StarCraft 2 with graphics maxed out (Ultra)...
Thanks

BTW, I tried to remove pulseaudio : it's doesn't affect the framerate at all. The CPU seems to be the limiting factor in my case.

I guess the only difference between our systems are:
- Ubuntu 10.04 x86 (you) x86-64 (me)
- I have 8 gigs RAM, you probably less
- I have a Phenom II X4 965 BE
- you have a 240 GT, I have a 470 GTX (drivers 256.44)
- I'm using a USB mic+headphones
- I'm using Compiz

I've installed wine 1.3.0 with pulseaudio and that works.

I'm definitely thinking is an issue with then fact I'm using 64 bit software component which is slowing down the game...

Well, I don't think so : I did install two distros at the same time to compare the framerate : it was the same. (Ubuntu 10.04 i386 and amd64).

Hi,

StarCraft 2 runs 60+FPS on "Ultra" graphic settings on my old computer.

My system is as follows:
- Dell XPS 420 (Modified) Code Named: "JetFire"
- Intel Core2Quad 2.4GHz 4 Core CPU (under-clocked to 1.6GHz)
- 4GB 800MHz DDR2 RAM
- 1GB DDR3 nVidia GT 240 Graphic Card (fanless)
(current nVidia drivers approved by Ubuntu team)
- Creative Sound Blaster Audigy SE PCI sound card
- Ubuntu 10.04 Linux 32bit Final
- Wine 1.2 Final
- StarCraft 2 v1.0.2 (current)
(1024x768 window/graphics setting on "Ultra" / 60+ FPS)

Sorry it does not work on your state-of-the-art computer...
(older technology is always better for a Linux box though)

Funny thing is that I tried all, but there's nothing to do (even with drivers 256.44).
Yes indeed it pisses me off quite a bit: to be honest I would play with low details anyway (it's easier to spot action etc etc) but again, having to play around 15~20 FPS with my videocard is quite depressing :( ... I just changed this pc basically for SC2! :P
Anyway I'll try uninstall a couple of non standard packages I have and see what happens!

Cheers

Apparently in my case it seems that PulseAudio might be the culprit.
I checked all the packages (and version as well) between my configuration and another person which has a 480 GTX, Kubuntu 64 bit.
I've used his settings for SC2, and the main difference between mine and his configuration is that he doesn't use PA.

Is there a quick way to purge PA (and in case reinstall it without issues)?

Thanks again,
Cheers,

Ps. I've tested my videocard with an OpenCL demo and boy if it's fast!

Well, just remove "pulseaudio" in synaptic ;-) (and disconnect or reboot)

When you want to reinstall, just install the meta package "ubuntu-desktop".
