I was able to get into the ship selection and I did notice that certain spots on a few models were black. Now when I tried to get into the main lobby it crashed completely. I've been working on getting this to work with wineskin and I think I'm getting closer to get it fully working.

This is the error I got after I selected a ship and lobby. Hopefully this helps coders to fix the issue.

Sorry I haven't had a chance to post sooner. I had trouble getting Arch working on my notebook and then the new Ubuntu was just released last week so I've been too occupied with getting everything re-installed and running again. I just had a chance to compile Wine 1.3.30 tonight so I should get a chance to post new test data tomorrow.

I did have an opportunity to install two fresh copies of Windows XP (English) on separate machines last week to test that official typing issue (which may or may not be related to our Wine bug #27293). A default install of SP3 (up-to-date with DirectX, patches & hotfixes) installed PSO 1.24.3 fine and typing worked. On the second box I installed the eastern language support (thinking that may trigger it) but it didn't - I was able to type and create my character without any issues. One of my friends suggested that it might have been some other software that those people had installed that interfered with the program - something like the language bar support in Office. We didn't have an available copy so we couldn't see if that was what it was.

As for the typing issue - here are the current theories we should investigate (feel free to add others):

- some of the imm32 functions being called in Wine are incomplete and do not fail gracefully
- the user's desktop environment (or shell) might be interfering with Wine, and in turn the game
- the modified exes (Schthack, Teth) appear to have had a typing patch applied that may help avoid bug #27293 *

* Both Schthack and the Teth exes were based on the Japanese version of the game so we're not sure what the nature of the patch was - (e.g. support for the english language files? support for Vista/Win7?)

@JHaleIT - thanks for posting those! First (and most importantly) please upload the log file to the bug page here:

http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12964

(There's some people on the CC list that will be auto-notified when you do - I'm not sure how many of them know or stay up to date with this thread.)

Second - what kind of graphics card are you using? (I'm more interested in brand - is it an ATI?)

Thirdly, what version of Wine were you using?

Lastly, (and please forgive my ignorance) is that a Mac or a Linux distro really well disguised? (if so what distro?)

Thank you!

I'm using a 13' mac mid 2010 with 10.7.2 lion and the video card is a built in nvidia 320M. I bought it like a week before the macs they have out now. I'm glad I did, because the new macs have Intel HD graphics. The wine version is 1.3.30 and I'm using wineskin to turn it into an individual app. I'll add the logs to there.

Thanks for getting back with the hardware info. A long time ago I could have sworn that I was able to get this far with Wine. I mentioned this on the bug page and even tried going through each version of Wine back to when I started using Ubuntu as my primary OS. It didn't dawn to me then at the time but back then I had a different notebook that used an ATI GPU. (that's the reason I asked about the hardware)

I'm not familiar with the 320M. Is that one of the chipsets that automatically switches between the GPU and CPU (Intel) graphics? If it is (and just to cover all bases) is it possible that the graphics were being rendered by the CPU when you were playing the game? (I'm not sure what the threshold is for the GPU to kick in. The system requirements for Blue Burst were pretty low and the game is capable of being run under integrated graphics - especially on modern hardware.) Also - you were still in the menu screens and while the lobby geometry is 3D it's less complicated than say, the ship or the planet. I'm wondering if your CPU was powering the graphics and if it crashed when the GPU was called in for extra muscle. Just a thought.

Anyone else have an machine with integrated Intel graphics that they can test this theory on?

It was using GPU power. This mac doesn't have the dual graphics cards like the new ones do. As for integrated this GPU has 256M DDR3 RAM dedicated to it. I was able to select the ship I wanted until when I get into the lobby the game crashed. I had to change some graphics settings in options for the game to get to that point. I think I had to turn on vortex fog and change the resolution to 800x600 so that the ship select would work.

I have a netbook with ATI / AMD E-350 APU, and I can't make it to the ship select screen either.

Looks like this is an AMD/ATI driver issue. File a bug report on
their site. Do not expect it to be fixed quickly but the more reports
the more likely AMD will respond.

Not really. I think you have missed the previous posts.
It's the exact same problem with NVIDIA. And VirtualBox too.
It seems Macs with NVIDIA can go a little bit more far, but they crash too.
It's surely a wined3d issue.

Yes it has to do with wined3d. It's either 1 a shader issue or 2 lighting issue.

Hello James. Nice to meet you. :)

A lot of people can't make it to the ship select. I was lucky to make it that far with messing with it for hours and hours, but it is random in a sense for me to get that far. Most the time when I get to ship select it's like 1 out of 20 times for me to get to that point.

There are similar typing bugs on Windows, and several workarounds.

Is there any workaround that works in wine?

Latest wine still won't work. It has to be a pixel shader issue.

Samething on 1.3.35 not working. I think this is a big bug in wine that needs to be fixed to make more games work.

Hello JHaleIT,m

Just tried it with wine 1.3.37 and it crashed at just before loading the ship lobby screen.
So it must be something wrong with your installation of wine or maybe your distro.

I'm using wineskin. I tried creating a new wrapper as well with no luck. It just freezes and shows a black box on the left corner of my screen. I have to force quit it.

I'm using a Mac OS 10.7.2. Nvidia 320M 256M resolution is at 1280x800. I just updated the other wineskin wrappers and they all seem to be fine. Just this wrapper for this game stopped working.

Hello JHaleIT,

Just in case you wanted to know SHPSOBB crashes in wine-1.4-RC1
(aka wine-1.3.38) this is some of the messeges on the terminal just before
it crashes.

fixme:imm:ImmDisableIME (0): stub
fixme:imm:ImeHandleNotify WM_IME_NOTIFY:IMN_SETCOMPOSITIONWINDOW
fixme:imm:NotifyIME IMC_SETCANDIDATEPOS
fixme:imm:ImeHandleNotify WM_IME_NOTIFY:IMN_SETCANDIDATEPOS
fixme:win:EnumDisplayDevicesW ((null),0,0xe8e2d8,0x00000000), stub!
fixme:d3d:wined3d_swapchain_set_gamma_ramp Ignoring flags 0x1.

This is the root cause of the crash:

Code: Select all

fixme:d3d:wined3d_swapchain_set_gamma_ramp Ignoring flags 0x1.
fixme:mountmgr:harddisk_ioctl Unsupported ioctl 7c088 (device=7 access=3 func=22 method=0)
fixme:d3d8:ValidatePixelShader (0xd7f2f0 0x0 1 0xe8efb8): stub
I'm guessing it has to do with how the pixel shader is being rendered
