I've also tested the demo and the game runs fine (Version 0.9 - md5sum 132d64673f64df22ac15056642ddd844 homm5_demo.exe).
My system specs:
wine-1.0-rc4-29-g035f1dd
Geforce 8800GTS
Driver: 171.06
Fedora 7 x86_64

What are your system specs?

wine (from 0.9.52 to 1.0-rc3)
GeForce 7600 GT
Driver: 173.14.05
Slackware current (32bit)

Please tell your kernel, I have suggestion that may be it relate to changes in 2.6.25 and further changes in nVidia drivers.

I'm also using 2.6.25 and 173.14.05 with a Geforce 7800 GT. And as I said before: no problems. I don't believe the kernel or the graphics driver seems to be the problem.
my only real difference to you is that I'm running Debian x64...
Have you tried renaming your .wine-directory and installing heroes 5 anew?

Yes, I have tried. As about my suggestion - this is some kind of desperate attempt to find problem anywhere :)

Probably, but why on same machine works 0.9.51 remain a mistery. I am prefer to wait for austin987's results.

Sorry for the delay, got distracted by other bugs.

Game doesn't crash on my machine in 0.9.52. Crashes in current git,
though that seems to be another already reported bug.

I'll try to test on another box, but I don't think it'll crash there,
as it's a similar spec'ed machine.

i have a very similar problem:
i'm on gentoo (wine ever compiled on my pc with the latest version of GCC that was avaliable at wine's release time).
i tried to run this game in every release since wine 0.9.60 ever without success. so this time i decided to ask for help here.

here is the entire console output:
http://pastebin.com/m2172c3f1
it is not necessary to pay attention to the firs outputs regarding ALSA.
some other games will work in a good way...so i think it is not a configuration problem...

Nearly the same problem here (albeit with slightly different messages, but those may be hardware/driver-specific). It seems to be unrelated to Wine, as I have reached version 0.9.50, which used to work fine in the past. Probably, it has something to do with the new xorg-server that I use now (version 1.4.2)? My system is a current Gentoo ~amd64 with an NVidia and an Intel video card, both failing.
