Greetings,
I'm looking into either WineHQ (or Crossover if need be). I understand their similarities and differences, but what I don't understand is how well either one will open one specific program -- which is all I need either software for.
This is the software --
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELECPhdfsiI
That software is essentially CAD. Their website does not specify requirements, but I was informed that Intel i5 or better is where you want to be at. Unfortunately this company does not offer a demo version of their software (at the moment) anywhere and so there is no way for me to test it with Wine and answer my question myself.
FOR YOU NON-NEWBIE USERS --
1. What are the chances Wine (or Crossover) would successfully open this software?
2. How stable is Wine with software it's known to work for?
Thanks for your help,
Me
Wine 101 Question
Re: Wine 101 Question
There is no way to tell from a video of the app running in Windows whether it will work in Wine or not.
I tried to find the minimum system requirements for this app, and like you, didn't really find anything on the vendor's website. But there is one thing I did see mentioned in the TUKAcad FAQ that is a cause for concern, and that's that some of their software requires a USB dongle to operate. Plain Wine does not support USB dongles. There were attempts in the past to add support, and there is an old patch you could try, but it has not been updated in a long time. So if the app you are looking at requires a dongle, don't expect it to work in plain Wine.
Platinum and gold rated applications should be as stable in Wine as they are in Windows. Some older apps have been reported to run better in Wine than in newer versions of Windows.
Those answers are for plain Wine. Crossover includes hacks that aren't part of plain Wine, so you should probably ask this on their forum, too, especially about support for USB dongles if the app requires it.
