Linux Mint 17 MATE/Brother's Keeper 6.6.x

Post by GMBK6user »

Hello,

This is my first post and I am very new (24 hours) to Wine.

I have installed Wine 1:1.6.2 (from Synaptec) and after a few tussles, the most serious being the lack of the dll library MSVBVM60.dll, I managed to install Brother's Keeper.

I'm not sure I installed the above library - how do I check?

Brother's Keeper appears to have installed correctly and I have a shortcut icon on my Desktop. I use this to start the program - success! BUT then after entering one person the program freezes and I am unable to exit in the normal way, the only way I have found is by using killall. When I next try to use the program it tells me I have four people in the database. If I start from scratch again, having deleted my entries, I can carry out some peripheral things such as setting the date format and it does not freeze.

I know there is a later version of Wine (I read that Brother's Keeper 6.6.x and Wine 1.7.13 have a 'Gold' classification).

I am desperate for some sound advice. Should I upgrade Wine? If so, how - do I have to uninstall 1.6.2 or can I upgrade? Does the upgrade run automatically? Other considerations?

Thank you.

Look for it in the wineprefix's system32 directory.

Yes, you should upgrade. You will have to add the Ubuntu Wine PPA if you haven't already. Your package manager should take care of uninstalling the old version when you install the new one. http://www.winehq.org/download/ubuntu

dimesio,

Thank you for your reply.

I located the library!

I am now attempting to update to Wine 1.7 and have encountered a problem.

I am following the 'Alternative Command Line' method. After installing the repository, I then attempted the sudo apt-get update but received the following error message:

Fetched 1,081 kB...
Reading package lists... Error!
E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /varlib/apt/lists/packages.linuxmint.com_dists_qiana_
import_i18n_Translation-en
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened

Your advice will be much appreciated!

Ask on the Mint forum. I don't use Mint, so I really can't help you with package manager issues.

dimesio

Thank you for your advice.

I duly posted on the Mint Forum and received help on the specific points I raised. Unfortunately that failed to resolve my problem so I updated to Wine 1.7.24.

Now, the program appears to run but will not close down. There are no error messages.

How should I proceed?

Try reinstalling the app to a clean wineprefix under 1.7.24. If that doesn't help, post terminal output.

Thank you for your reply.

Could I clarify what you mean by "reinstall to a clean wineprefix under 1.7.24"?

Does this mean that I should delete Wine and start again?

Incidentally, I see that a new version of Brother's Keeper is now available. Do you have any idea when this will be rated for its compatibilty with Wine?

Sorry, I forgot to ask about your ratings.

The Gold rating is ssid to be for applications that "run flawlessly with some special configuration". In the case of Brother's Keeper, what would this be?

As soon as a user decides to submit a test report.

Those should be listed in the test report that rates it gold.

I am sorry but I am struggling with the terminology.

You have recommended that I should "delete the wineprefix and start again".

Could you please detail the steps required to carry out the deletion? What is the command? By 'start again' do you mean reinstall Wine (1.7.26) from the repository? What about gecko and mono? Winetricks?

Thank you.

A wineprefix is just a directory. You can delete it in your file manager the same way you would delete any other directory.

By "start over" I mean reinstall your app to a clean wineprefix after deleting the old one. FYI, reinstalling Wine does not delete any wineprefixes and will not solve problems caused by a messed-up wineprefix.

Thank you for your further help.

Two more questions.

When after a reinstall I start Brother's Keeper, Wine tells me that it needs mono. Looking at Synaptic I see wine-mono 0.0.8-Oubuntu1 (installed) but also wine-mono4.5.0 and wine-mono4.5.2. Should I install one of these?

Secondly, to run Brother's Keeper in the Terminal, what is the exact command? If I go into Winetricks to look at my C: drive and then drill down, I see the following across the top of the screen:

gam .wine dosdevices c: Program Files Brother's Keeper 7 Bk7w.exe

Thank you again.

Yes. Install 4.5.2.

Thank you. I duly installed wine-mono4.5.2 and for a few minutes I thought that had done the trick. I could open the program, edit and close down. However, though it will start up, it now hangs once again. No error messages.

Re the wiki, I can get so far then I am stuck.

If I:
cd /home then
cd gam/.wine/drive_c/

that works BUT how do I then get to the position in your wiki of either using the program filename (your first example) or trying the other two methods? (to recap: Program Files/Brother's Keeper 7/Bk7w.exe) What should I expect to see if ever I get to running the program in the Terminal? I am becoming quite pessimistic about the chances of a successful outcome to this exercise.

Thank you! Now there is some progress.

The program started correctly. I then had a look at the second entry before exiting the program, again correctly.

This is the output on the Terminal - any clues? Subject to your reply, my next step will be to attempt to add some data,
