WINE crashing after installing exe

[Kymus]

I'm running a fresh install of Ubuntu 13.04 (ok, well, backup, format, and a pasting of my home folder). Installed WINE no problem. Not to install some windows programs..

Everything goes through fine until right at the end of the installation, then WINE crashes. I've done this with two different programs, I've resetted, I've tried again; still the same problem.

Had some trouble with upgrading since Ubuntu's software center kept installing 1.4.1, I finally added the PPA and installed 1.6

I'm still having the same problem, though, unfortunately:

For Steam you need to upgrade to 1.7.8. The Steam update of Dec. 3 broke all earlier versions of Wine. http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=35030

I updated WINE to the newest version and Steam installed fine! When I load it, though, the menu is blank. I tried inputing my username/password anyway (cursor doesn't move while typing, but the UI does seem to be somewhat responsive) and I just get an unknown error (from Steam). I am pretty sure this is a known bug (I vaguely remember this from before my format/reinstall), but if it's not liking my u/p, I'm not sure what the proper step should be. Suggestions?
