This bug has been open since 2008 but it still does not have a status of "CONFIRMED"

Bugs are confirmed when someone with bugzilla triage privileges confirm them, generally because they are able to reproduce the problem themselves. However, confirming a bug has nothing to do with whether or not it will ever be fixed; AFAICT, developers pay little to no attention to that field.
As for the best way to participate as a user, you've already done that by adding a comment to the bug report with updated information.
