Hello everyone in the Wine Community!
I use Xubuntu 12.04 and have been using wine for quite a while, but a few days ago, i installed my first actual windows game on Wine, Battlefeild 1942!
I think Wine is really great expecially for those who have windows games, but don't have windows. In future would it be possible for Wine to run the Sims 1 & 2? Currently on the Compatibility page, it says they both run like garbage. So yeah looking forward to see Wine progress :D

Hello Josh,

Simon here, my friend owns both of those games so (assuming he allows me to borrow them) I will see what I can do to get them up and running. But a lot of times people submit an app or game as "garbage" and then others see that and just don't try. So here is what you can do to help yourself for now. Using terminal window run the installer from the CD/DVD such as; wine /media/cdtitle/setup.exe or what ever the path might be.

When or IF it fails you should get an error message(s). Copy and paste the error message(s) on here, so we can look it over as a group and resolve the issues together.

Thanks!

Okay, I have actually tried The Sims 1 before, but whenever i go to run it, it won't run :(
But seeing that i got Battlefield to run in wine, i suppose i could give The Sims and The Sims 2 another go :)

Hi Simon, Thankyou for the reply.

Earlier i tried the Sims 1, it installs without a problem but when i go to run it, it goes to run, but then it is stuck at a black screen. Here is how i installed it, i went to Terminal and typed: cd THE_SIMS Then it opened the cd's contents, i went down to setup.exe and installed it. Here are some error messages:

I finally got my friend to loan me his Sims 1 CD original. I wonder if this isn't the CD protection we are running up against? I ran it and it does install, entered the CD key from the case and got the error message when I tried to play the game. I tried to also install from /media/drive_c/maxis/sims but the custom directory did not help any.

Since the game installed without error or issue several times, I think running the program it might be just some real jazzy game protection. Call me a stick in the mud, but I don't like resorting to game hacks. If anyone has any suggestions I might try, my friend is in no hurry to get his game back. I am not one to throw in the towel easy.

Thankyou for your help Simon, as you said, it could be a real jazzy protection system. Hopefully in the future we can find a way to get The Sims 1 to run.
