Pilot Log Software Installs but Won't Run

Post by bgood »

I have a PC running Ubuntu 8.04 with Wine 1.0.0 and I am attempting to install Log Book Pro (http://logbookpro.com/). I've attempted the install multiple times, with and without winetricks downloads implemented, but always with the same results. The program installs, opens but has very limited functions that respond (ie the menus/buttons show options but then nothing happens with most of them). Once you close the program, the next time you open it you get the usual pop-up asking you to Buy, Evaluate or Register. When I click Evaluate it literally takes over 5 minutes for the application to open -- the initial opening takes about 15 seconds. When I've used winetricks I've tried usuing: flash, gecko, jet40, mdac28, msxml6, vcrun2008, allfonts, and fakeie6 in various combinations and none of these seems to change anything.

I've copied the Term Output from running the command line install into a text file but don't see a way to attach a file to the post. I apologize for putting the output directly into this post but don't see another option for providing the info.

Thanks for the help.

Austin987, thanks for the suggestion.

I deleted the .wine file and then CD to the Desktop directory to run the installer. The Term output was nearly identical except for the memory locations for the first few lines which I've pasted below, in case they help.

The application still installs but only partially functions.

Is it possible to get the Windows Help feature running in Wine? I'm wondering if there might be some clues in the application's help files about what I could try.

Thanks,

Hi, i gave the app a try, a few remarks:

>The program installs, opens but has very limited functions that respond

I don't see that really. What i did is 'winetricks art2kmin' and the install the app.
Further it looks like it also needs scrrun.dll. I copied it over from my windowspartitrion into system32, and did 'regsvr32 scrrun'

>When I click Evaluate it literally takes over 5 minutes for the application to open -- the >initial opening takes about 15 seconds.

I see that too ; i suggest to open a bug for that in bugzilla. As a workaround i copied oleaut32.dll from my windowspartition into system32, and ran the app by
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="oleaut32=n" wine Logbook.exe

Obviously this must be some kind of bug in wine's oleaut32 i guess.

Could you try the above things, and let us know if there's improvement? Good luck!

Thanks for the input, it resulted in lots of progress.

I wiped the .wine file and started fresh. Installed the art2kmin and the dll files. Then installed Logbook Pro. Actually got to work with the app this time and fill in data so it looks like we are ready to load some data and do some testing. The one thing we did notice is that on some of the forms when we selected a field, a copy of the form heading and input field actually showed up at the very top of the Ubuntu Desktop (actually right on top of Applications, Places and Systems). Is there something we can adjust to fix this? (I've pasted the Term output below).

A few of other questions?
1. Do I need to run the "WINEDLLOVERRIDES="oleaut32=n" wine Logbook.exe " whenever running this application or can I just click on the desktop icon?
2. Will I be able to install other Windows applications normally or do these changes limit me to running Logbook Pro? Thinking about installing Windows Media Player so I can load MP3 into my Verizon phone and their MP3 Player in the phone only talks to WMP.
3. We originally started this testing on an iBook running Darwine. Should your changes work for that configuration as well or is it even pointless to try with Apple's X11 issues?

THANKS so much for the help!

The one thing we did notice is that on some of the forms when we selected a field, a copy of the form heading and input field actually showed up at the very top of the Ubuntu Desktop (actually right on top of Applications, Places and Systems). Is there something we can adjust to fix this?
Maybe 'winetricks riched20' could help but that's just a wild guess

1. Do I need to run the "WINEDLLOVERRIDES="oleaut32=n" wine Logbook.exe " whenever running this application or can I just click on the desktop icon?
You can set oleaut32 to native for this app in winecfg (see wine user's guide). Then you can start it from the desktop (and it will use native oleaut32)
2. Will I be able to install other Windows applications normally or do these changes limit me to running Logbook Pro? Thinking about installing Windows Media Player so I can load MP3 into my Verizon phone and their MP3 Player in the phone only talks to WMP.
just set it to native for this app only . see wine user's guide
3. We originally started this testing on an iBook running Darwine. Should your changes work for that configuration as well or is it even pointless to try with Apple's X11 issues?
No idea really. Just give it a try i'd say. Good luck!

Appreciate that input. I made your recommended changes and the app is running much better. I think Ubuntu pulled down a Wine update which may have had some impact but the application now opens in less than 5 seconds. So, things seem to be running really well on this platform. Will try the Apple/Darwine configuration in a week or so once we are sure this is stable here. I will updated the Bugzilla bug report as well.

Couldn't have gotten here without your input! Thanks! :D
