Steam won't start

I just tried to install Steam through Wine and PlayOnLinux.

It installed successfully, but hung on the client update. I try to start Steam.exe with the command 'wine steam.exe' as well as the PlayOnLinux launcher. The window pops up for a moment, saying 'Connecting account', which then goes away and the program pops up an error message after about the money.

Any ideas? Would the timezone error actually be causing this and how could I fix it?

I feel sorry for you, using the word "playonlinux" is a death sentence here.

I tried Steam install/launch with both POL and "simple" wine (from deb testing repo), they both work good, no connexion problems, no crash, nothing wrong to report. connect/work faster with POL anyway since it use wine 1.3.9...Probably some improvement with steam in unstable branch.

winefan62 we are at long last having talking time with POL developers.

They will be updating the loging system in POL to tell us what we need to know. Current POL logs lack sets of key information.

They are also dropping there own custom scripts duplication of winetricks functionality.

So some point through next year supporting POL will be practical.

Particularly want version wine was used. So even that you both installed with POL one can be using different versions of wine explaining the different outcomes.

I'm having the same issue with startup. A small STEAM window opens, says Connecting to Steam and then it closes.

All I can get is the login screen. It keeps making me re register computer. first dialog will disappear. then I get connecting dialog after a minute then it is gone. steam.log just has "told to exit". Fedora 17. "wine steam.exe -no-dwrite" . i turned off the mmap bool too.

i gitted the source to wine and i think I may see problem area. It is failing when trying to access gnome keyring.

would using kde be a problem?
