Very slow 3D in DX6 app with DRI enabled]

Post by Poddubchak Sergey »

Hi there. The application is System Shock 2. Old game that uses DX6.
It runs very slow in Wine on my hardware, however other native
3D applications runs just fine as well as some other windows apps
via Wine (DeusEx).

Here is what i get on console when running System Shock 2(It also
freezies computer almost every time when it tries to switch to
initialise 3D engine, it was hard to run it and exit without hangup):

dusoft@suse-note:~/winec/games/Sshock2> wine SHOCK2

16 bpp didn't help. DirectDrawRenderer made things even worse - slower and with graphical distortions

Yep.. that means change your laptop... I don't believe that graphics chip released in some 200[6|7] lacks some hardware accelerated techniques that were available in 98.. or 96.. And I'm sure on windows this app will work just fine with this hardware.

Wine can only do so much if the video drivers don't provide the needed
functions.

Yes, the 945GM perform horrible with the current Linux drivers for 3D
stuff, much worse than their windows-counterparts.
However the situation will improve a bit with TTM or GEM memory
manager in kernel, however that can take some time.

I for myself would not buy nvidia cards because they suffer from
terrible performance under 2D and they don't release their specs.
AMD does, and their drivers are now compareable with NVidia's on Linux.
Maybe for now specs are not important at all for you, but maybe you
would like to use the card when its old in some web-browsing computer
where maintained 2D drivers would be nice, even a few years after
buying it.

AMD does, and their drivers are now compareable with NVidia's on Linux.
AMD has released the ATI specs, yes, but the drivers are not nearly
comparable to Nvidia's on Linux. In a few years, maybe...

Well I am not so sceptical, ATI driver is making progress[1], probably because
there is a great deal of enthusiasm, and I think that the driver will catch
up with nvidia's driver sooner. I guess I'm just an ATI fan who's fed up with
NVidia ;)

The proprietary drivers are now compareable to NVidia's, at least for
3D. For 2D both suck.
A few months ago they changed their complete OpenGL implementation to
a new cross-platform one (the same way nvidia is doing now for some
years), and now the proprietary drivers perform equal to their windows
counterparts.
http://www.phoronix.com/ did some testing and they were impressed.
