Sim City 4 won't start
Sim City 4 won't start
I am new to using wine and I'm still learning Linux so please be specific. I'm using Ubuntu 8.04 with the newest version of wine. When I installed Sim City 4 Deluxe I saved Disc 1 on my computer then put disc 2 in and installed the game. When I try to start it the Wine window comes up for a second then closes. Can some one explain what is going on. Any help would be nice. Thanks
Find the terminal/console program somewhere on your menu. I don't use Ubuntu, so I can't tell you exactly where it is.
In the terminal, change directories to the directory where you have installed Sim City 4. If you installed to the default directory, the command would look something like
substituting your username for "user."
Then run the program with
Copy whatever messages appear in the terminal/console window to your clipboard and post them here.
In the terminal, change directories to the directory where you have installed Sim City 4. If you installed to the default directory, the command would look something like
Code: Select all
cd "/home/user/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Maxis/SimCity 4 Deluxe/Apps"
Then run the program with
Code: Select all
wine "SimCity 4.exe"
Is this it?

You forgot to cd to the directory where SimCity 4.exe is located. If you don't want to do that each time, start it with the full Windows-style path:
Code: Select all
wine "C:\Program Files\Maxis\SimCity 4 Deluxe\Apps\SimCity 4.exe"
Now it says this
sorry for all this trouble
Code: Select all
wine: cannot find 'C:\Program Files\Maxis\SimCity 4 Deluxe\Apps\SimCity 4.exe'
kevin@kevin-desktop:~$
First double-check where SimCity 4.exe is actually installed. Looking again at your terminal output, it looks like you were trying to execute the program from the windows/system32 subdirectory. That's not where SimCity 4.exe is normally located, at least not with a default install.
Open your file manager, set it to show hidden files, and find out exactly where SimCity 4.exe is. Then use the directions I gave you the first time to execute it in a terminal, substituting the actual path for the one I gave if it is different.

Whats all this?

The program crashed at startup for some reason. I have no idea why; it works fine on my system.
Try starting it with this command:
Also, exactly what version of Wine are you using? The latest is 1.0-rc4. If you're using anything older than that, upgrade, because there were some regressions in the previous few versions that affected many games.
Try starting it with this command:
Code: Select all
wine "SimCity 4.exe" -d:software -intro:off

That or updating doesn't seem to work.Reece Dunn wrote:2008/6/10 kmpgame <[email protected]>:

I don't know what else there can be done. Any more suggestions?
