Remove IE8 from wine

Post by nameuser »

Hello community,

I would like to remove IE8, which commes automatically during installation, because I need missed javascript.
Then I plan to install IE6.

So, how to remove IE8 when I haven't it listed in "Uninstall wine software" but it is for sure somewhere here (after starting IE6 installation I get message "... newer version of IE is installed").

IE8 is not installed automatically with Wine; you don't have it unless you installed it yourself. What is included in some distro packages is wine-gecko, which is Wine's substitute for IE. What the IE6 installer is probably complaining about are the fake IE registry entries that come with wine-gecko. To get around it, use winetricks to install real IE.

I understand.
After installing one program which need IE to work in his menu he offers options "default browser" and "IE8", thats why I thought that I have IE8 installed.

I also try to use winetricks but there is some broken link and other known messages (like update your wine (which is newest)).
After this I downloaded with wget IE60.exe and unpack it to my desktop.
Can I use winetricks with this and how simplest to do this?

That's wine's fake IE.

Well, I do my best to upgrade everithing regarded wine and winetricks.
This of course dont work again.

Most obvious reason is that winetricks try to download ie6 from dead server:

I have to change this to valid server
but I dont know which file to edit (name and location).

Did you download winetricks from http://winetricks.org? If you are getting it from a distro package you probably don't have the latest version (currently 20111115).
Most obvious reason is that winetricks try to download ie6 from dead server:
If that's happening with the latest version, report the problem to http://winetricks.org.
but I dont know which file to edit (name and location).
It's your system, you should know where you put it.

Never run Wine as root. http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#run_as_root

Install it as a normal user.

Try installing IE7 instead.

Three: Since you did not state which Linux distribution you are

Ubuntu 11.04 vice Natty.) Also, can you provide the version of wine
you are using (wine --version in a terminal session/console.)
Dimesio mentioned not using root, but some Linux distributions default
to only that user and you will have to create another user to run Wine
with.

Thank you.

I do not know how I use wine as root and how do not use it as root.
Here everything happens automatically! And I have wery short experience (and obviously knowledge) with linux.

@jjmckenzie, I noted some incorrect decodings regarding my code page in IE7 and higher so I need IE6. Actually, I don't need a internet browser as internet browser (there are many choices) but system components of IE6 because program which I need uses this. Also I need javascript support with this.
So I would like IE6.

Linux 11.10 Oneiric 64bit, wine 1.3.32.
Regarding all I search for most simplest solution to get this to work.

When you installed Ubuntu, did you create any users? If you did not,
please do so and run Wine with them. If you do not know how to create
users, please ask on the Ubuntu forums.

After doing so, try using winetricks to install IE6 after downloading
the most current version which is 20111115 per dimesio and the
product's author.

Your log makes it look like ie6 installed just fine. What problem are you having, again?

But it also shows you're running as root.

How did you log in to Linux? What username did you use?

What does
whoami
who am i
display if you run them in a terminal?

Did you use sudo bash or something? After doing that, the terminal session is running as root.

James, I dont yet create any users but install process makes one for me.

DanKegel, I found now what I donned.
Yes, I have shortcut to two terminals.
One which want password to start and one which not.
I uses those one (with password) because I can edit, copy, delete and so system files and folders (including winetricks). Now I know that this makes me root!
root@name-think:/usr/bin# whoami
root
root@name-think:/usr/bin# who am i
root pts/1 2011-11-18 12:44 (:0.0)
With normal terminal
name@name-think:~$ whoami
name
name@name-think:~$ who am i
name pts/2 2011-11-18 22:21 (:0.0)
Obviously, I have to use those second to run winetricks?
But if i start winetricks ie6 he want to download again. Is this normal?
I belive that IE6 is not installed because I can't see them anywhere on c drive and my software offers me "wine internet explorer" which is reported as IE8 in software's menu.

What to do now?

Yes, because you haven't downloaded or installed it as your user. The IE6 you downloaded previously was installed in .wine and cached in .cache/winetricks in root's home directory, not yours.
What to do now?
What you've already been told: run winetricks as a normal user.
