New prefix vs default ~/.wine file with default app

Hello.

There seems to be no instructions on how to tell ubuntu to use a new prefix for a file type, which might have previously been associated with another prefix. For instance, you can delete MS Office from one prefix and install it in a freshly made prefix. I'm not suggesting renaming prefixes, but creating new ones.

I believe a new user defined prefix is not treated the same as ~/.wine.

Is this true?

Amazing! I will try it! Sorry, but I'm a bit confused how to apply this new patch. I assume it's in the new prefix and perhaps under one of the .reg files.

Oh... is see that patching wine involves:

1) uninstalling wine
2) downloading the source only from the deb
3) use the patch command
4) knowing how to compile wine

I might have to wait until the summer break to proceed with this as it requires research and time for experimentation.

You don't have to uninstall your package, as Wine can be run from the build directory without installing it, but yes, you do have to patch and build Wine from source.

I'd test it myself, but I've pretty much messed up winemenubuilder's ability to do anything correctly by manually editing and deleting things, so a test on my system is not going to be a fair one.

Because I have lots of work to do and I lack the necessary skills to proceed with this patch, I've decided to give up on this and just reinstall Ubuntu and Office during this upcoming weekend.

Again, thank you all very much for your help. I now have a greater understanding of wine and when I have time I'll experiment further with these fixes, since it's valuable knowledge to me.
