Message: "HTML rendering is currently disabled"

Post by gbritton »

I have installed Firefox and IE 6 as well as Quicktax 2007 under wine 9.57. Firefox works OK, but I cannot start either IE6 or Quicktax. The first few messages on the console when starting IE6 are:

fixme:shell:StopWatchMode () stub!
fixme:ole:CoResumeClassObjects stub
fixme:shdocvw:go_home stub
fixme:urlmon:URLMonikerImpl_BindToObject use running object table
fixme:win:WIN_CreateWindowEx Parent is HWND_MESSAGE
Could not load Mozilla. HTML rendering will be disabled.

With both programs, once I start them, I am greeted with the message

"HTML rendering is currently disabled"

in the middle of the window.

How can I get around this error?

Why is Wine looking for Mozilla when launching IE6?

Sorry, we don't currently support IE 6 under Wine.
You can find a script that installs it with appropriate workarounds at
http://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux
Contact that script's author if you have problems.

Actually I don't care about IE6, I only installed it to try to get around the HTML rendering disabled message. (I thought that maybe I needed it for some reason)

What I'm really concerned about is Quicktax, which shows the same message at startup.

How can I get around the message about Mozilla?

In modern Wine versions you can run 'wine iexplore http://winehq.prg' and click on "install" button when prompted to install wine-gecko.

Running

wine iexplore http://winehq.org

does not give me a prompt to install wine-gecko, just the message:

HTML rendering is currently disabled

But then, I don't need to run iexplore. I want to run quicktax, which causes the same error.

Is there a demo version of quicktax around somewhere?

Then your Wine version is either too old. Or it's time to wipe that ~/.wine directory and reinstall your program.

I just installed wine for the first time, using the most current version that I could find:

dunno about a quicktax demo. I did the winetricks gecko thing and it got rid of the message. Alas, Quicktax gets no further.

Why does WINE care if Mozilla is installed? Will it refuse to render

No, the error message is benign, you can ignore it.
Is there a fix?
Yes. This is http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10090
and the wine developers have an idea how to get rid of
that bogus message. Vote for that bug if you want to encourage them
to fix it.

white page when running iexplore, wine_gecko seems to work

I noticed this thread hasn't been updated in almost a year but I'm experiencing a similar problem. I'm running wine on os x and my wine-gecko directories look like this:

The contents of the wine_gecko directory are the same (i wasn't sure if the "wine_gecko" folder that I unpacked from the .cab file was supposed to exist in the gecko/0.1.0 folder or not).

I also tried the winetricks method and it seemed to run without error, non-verbose output:

whenever I try to run iexplore from wine (ie, "wine iexplore http://winehq.prg" or any other url) it opens up the window for Internet Explorer but it only displays a solid white page and this is the output on the command-line:

Which is some progress ;) because it used to display the message about not having wine_gecko installed. Does anybody have any ideas about how I can get this working?
Honestly, I don't really give a crap about web-browsing in wine, but I'm using Steam and steam seems to require wine_gecko to browse their store.

For what it's worth, this is the output on the cli when I try to run Steam:

Oops, solved it myself, I had confusion between the windows/system32/gecko directory and the windows/gecko/ directory, was able to get this working without even restarting X, thank you!

You may need to install Firefox to access Steam games, maybe?

Hmm.. why would that be?
I can play the games just fine, I'm just having trouble using the browser in steam to browse the web store.

I can work around this by browsing the web store in a browser running natively, then installing new games by finding their id and running something like this:

Code: Select all

wine ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Steam/Steam.exe -applaunch [game_id]
but the optimal solution would be to get the browser in Steam working.

Ok. I think this is a known problem. Try looking through the Wine
Bugzilla and if such a report exists, register and vote for it.

The nearest I could find in the bugs database was this:
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15263
which isn't exactly the same issue, this bug is about being able to view the store but not being able to activate the purchase links - I can't view the store at all.

I'm inclined to believe that my problem isn't a bug with wine per se, but more like a problem with my own configuration of some of the programs that run via wine, wine_gecko and what not.

The reason I believe this is because I am able to open a page by running the standalone version of iexplore, but it doesn't work when the iexplore window happens inside the steam program.. it makes me think that Steam's instance of iexplore is looking in a different place for wine_gecko than iexplore uses when run standalone.

When I try to open the store using the iexplore window in steam, I get the same results as when I tried to open iexplore alone when wine_gecko was not configured correctly - a white page. Obviously I understand this might not be the only cause for this result but it seems to follow..

It could also be I don't understand what the heck is going on, I'll keep poking around with the configuration and using the workaround described above (which I found in the bug)
